They all do it. It can be reduced with some fairly easy modification work to the fill pipe (installation of a restrictor plate). See here, here, and here.

it takes a lot longer to fill with gas, but my dart does fine if i put the pump on the first "click" setting for slow pump, but fixing the problem is better.

I never "Fill-up" and early A-body...
I just figure-out how much the car will take, to get to 7/8 of a tank, max... and put that much $$ on the pump. That way, the pump slows & stops before "spitting back".

Well I never have enough money to get it THAT full... 20-30 bucks is about it for my monthly allotment... Course my car is an F and it does spew, dribble, run down the quarter panel even on slow setting unless i turn nozzle just right...

Cheap, Fast, Reliable.... Pick 2...

I always fill my tanks full. This is the ONLY way to get a reliable gas mileage measurement, which I do on every tank.

Here's what I do:

1) Estimate how much the tank will take based on the gas gauge (say 12 gals if the gauge says 1/4 tank).
2) Put nozzle into filler neck with a fairly large cloth rag held between the bottom half of the pump pipe/shroud and the car body and filler neck. Hold the pump nozzle in firmly and push the nose of it down as much as possible. The rag should stay there for the whole time of pumping.
3) Put the pump on the highest setting for 3/4 of that amount (say 9 gals).
4) Move pump to lowest setting and hold firmly in, as in step 2.
5) Gas will come up the neck and hit the rag and not spill out. Usually I can do this without dribbling on the paint.

You will hear the gas coming up the neck if you get your ear within about 1-2 ft of the filler neck opening, and you can sometimes stop it before the fuel reaches the rag.

On my '66-down cars, I hold the nozzle in for the whole time (steps 2 on). On my '68 Dart, I can leave it there w/o the rag and wash windows or check oil until it gets to the end of step (3) above, at which point, I hold it in and go on with step (4).
