Ryan's flywheel came loose this week at the races. I ordered new ARP crank bolts but I'd like to secure them so they can't back out again. Does anyone know where you can buy the metal plates that would go under the bolts and then bend them up against the head so the bolts can't back out? Even if they were for some other engine that had the holes close, I could drill them out a bit. If not I will just make some.

Would it be possible to safety wire them?

My flywheel attaching stuff is over at the garage in Menominee. Those strips I mentioned were originally made for small block Chevy and used to be generally available like a Mr. Gasket skin packaged product. I have not seen them for many years and there may be a reason they are no longer used. I remember that ARP warns against using any type of a washer with their bolts and maybe it is not good to have anything between the bolt and the flywheel. I have always reused some old ones I have and I have never had a problem while using them. You could probably make them out of about .030 steel making sure they all weighed the same.

Stage 8 makes flywheel bolts that lock through tabs attached to the top of the bolts by a snap ring. I use similar bolts on torque converters with good results. If there is nothing to jam the tabs against you might have to drill some holes and insert some short roll pins where needed. You could also drill the bolt heads and use safety wire to secure them.

Flywheel attachment on a Slant has always been a problem. If you have SSRN#1 there is short article on this sublject.

volkswagen uses those tabs through out the entire front end from the late 40's and up. very handy. i would just spend the time, drill each bolt, and safety wire. it is very proven, and you can use it for many other things.

I have had 2 come loose. This one had the holes cleaned and I did locktite them although it was blue. Drilling and wire ties just seems harder than the plate with tabs. Maybe I'm crazy. I may just make some. I just thought maybe someone knew of something out there that would work.

it takes me a couple minutes to drill a bolt head... but, if you use RED locktite, you shouldnt have an issue, if they come lose, you got problems

Red locktite may be the answer, but flywheels coming loose on inline engines has been a problem for a long time. Again red locktite may do it, but I made my own plate and will give it a try. Here is a picture

It only took me about and hour to "tinker" with it and get it right. I made a pattern onto index stock so I'll have it in the future.

And if you are running your flywheel bolts on with the impact, you are likely tightening them to at least twice what the torque specs are. And maybe that is all I needed to do. But Ours will have a positive stop now.
