I finally located a functioning, used, fuel gauge for my '64 Valiant, but was surprised to discover it doesn't operate the same as the old one.

The original gauge was apparently damped so that the needle moved slowly and remained stable when gas sloshed in the tank. The replacement moves quickly, but varies by 1/8 scale as the gas moves in the tank.

It works fine, but it seems odd to find gauges from the same year that operate differently.

I'd think adding a capacitor to the circuit would damp down the swings.............

There is one (and only one) kind of fuel gauge for your car. There are no damped vs. non-damped, etc. Adding devices (capacitors, etc.) is not called for -- finding and fixing the problem is. How does your temperature gauge behave? How did your previous fuel gauge fail?

The five volt regulator failed, which also made the temp gauge inop. I opened the bad gas gauge and found the winding had burned and broken.

With the "new" gas gauge everything works. The only difference is the faster movement, which is not a problem, only a noted difference.

FWIW, the points on the "new" gas gauge were stuck together when I got it, so I cleaned them with fine sandpaper. Other than that, the movement was clean, with no signs of arcing. I don't know how cleaning the points would cause the different needle behavior, but I'm willing to listen to logic.

Oog. Stuck points means cooked gauge. Not cooked to death, as it seems, but partially cooked. Hunt for one that doesn't have stuck points, get it, disable the points-type limiter and install an external electronic one.
