I am getting ready to rebuild another 904, this one for my Valiant wagon. I got a spare tranny from a member so I decided to pull this one apart and check the condition.

This 904 has a bearing in the tailshaft and the tailshaft is 7/8" longer than the other spares that I have (12 7/8"). All my other spares (and the ones that I have recently rebuilt) have a bushing in the rear, and the tailshaft is 12" long.

There are several numbers on the casting. These 2 are just above the pan:

Can anyone tell me what I have?

I don't know what you have, but you should be able to use a tailshaft and housing from another trans that matches what you have in your car.

2408 002: 1963 Dart/Valiant A904 with 225 engine (+ with 170 engine and heavy-duty transmission option). This will work in any '60-'64 Slant-6 A-body. It will work in a '65 if you swap in a '65 valve body (or swap the relevant parts from a '65 valve body onto the '63 valve body). See filter info here.

Thanks guys. It has the '65 valve body in it now. The Valiant is a '65. I figured I would have trouble if I used it because of the longer length unless the drive shaft would collapse enough to make up for the 7/8" extra length. I could use the tailshaft from another spare I have, but instead of doing that I would just rebuild a different one. I am surprised to see this one because all of the other trannies that I have recently rebuilt have the bushing instead of the bearing.

Dan, do the numbers indicate that this is a "heavy duty" unit?

7/8" extra length should not be a go/no-go type of deal. If anything it will probably wind up doing you a favour because the ball and trunnion front U-joint will ride on a different portion of the housing rather than the (probably worn) part it's been riding on all along.

This transmission was standard equipment behind a 225. It was considered "heavy duty" when it was behind a 170 engine; the 170s got a lighter-duty transmission as standard equipment.

It is interesting that my '64 FSM shows 4 front clutch disks for a 225 and 3 for a 170, but the '65 FSM shows 3 disks for the 170 & 255, and 4 disks for the 273. I guess they were trying to save money. This tranny has only 3 disks.
