I'm going to guess he's talking about a grilled cheese sandwich cut in the form of a carb base gasket to serve the insulation function, with the rest of the sandwich (extending out from the carb flange) serving the heat shield function.

My guess is as good as yours until he stops being cagey and coy and shows us what the heck he found.

Curently I have the card mounted straight to the intake, I'm guessing the thick one would work better, let me know what you think.

Phenolic spacer, not a heat shield. Although it is nice and tall and might help low RPM torque a bit.

Casually looking for a Clifford hyperpak intake for cheap.

Neither of those is a heat shield. The brown one is a custom/aftermarket item that is way too thick for most passenger car, truck, and van applications without throttle and choke and transmission linkage modifications, and even if you make those mods the odds are against your being able to close the hood once you've installed the air cleaner.

The black/grey one is just a standard production 3/8" thick insulating-type carb base gasket, the kind that's supposed to be there on just about every 2bbl slant-6 and V8.

I still think my grilled cheese idea has merit.

Mmmm grilled cheese.

You would probably have to stay clear of "American cheese" since I think it's made with petroleum bi-products. Could be a potential fire hazard.

Thanks for the feedback, I will probably experiment with both if the mods are not to bad on the thicker insulater. Hood clearance is not an issue right now with the tiny air cleaner I am currently using.

Tiny air cleaner = more of the kinds of problems you're trying to solve with a heat shield.

At least get a 6 inch diameter air cleaner on that thing (10 would be better). Those itty bitty filters are a huge restriction.

Use a factory air cleaner with a thermostatic snorkel. An air cleaner with an open/exposed element is not better, it's worse.
