Howdy, Gentlemen,

I run the Wix 51515 on both the slant and the 390 in our Rose parade float. This year I sent someone out for oil & filters rather than going myself. They went to Pep Boys (who doesn't carry Wix), and were substituted K&N (#9003 or 9001 I think, the receipt's rather smudged). I was up against a pending road test, so had to go with'em.

The question becomes; are the K&N decent enough, or now that the test's over do I need to fetch me some more Wix?
Bear in mind a float puts on all of about 50 miles total per year.

Ugh. Their air filters are a total scam (they cost too much, especially since they, um, like, totally don't keep dirt out of your engine), so I have no interest in their overpriced, almost-certainly-also-total-scam oil filters.

(Proof about the K&N air nonfilter scam? Sure, see here (holy crap—an OEM AC filter passed only 0.4 grams of dust over the same test the K&N passed 7.0 grams!) and here ("After only 24 minutes the K&N had accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N plugged up nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt") and here.

Keep running Wix. Or if you gotta have super-duper-premium, it's Fleetguard LF3487.

I agree with Dan (K&N air filters are overpriced poo) but I don't have an opinion about the oil filters.

However, a vehicle that sees only 50 miles per year might be a great candidate for some rare earth magnets attached to the pan or oil filter to suck absolutely ALL particulate metal out of suspension.

Well, that may help in explaining their claimed HP additions for their air filters. Less filtering certainly would result in less restriction for an intake. How much would be debatable of course.

So ....... no tales of K&N oil filter materials going on inner engine expeditions? I have only personally seen one Fram do this, but have no hands on with K&N.

If it's only less filtration, I can wait for February to change'em out. Hell, we're required to change the oil every year anyway, don't actually need a filter (don't ask ...... don't get me started  ).
Otherwise I'll need to put 54' of float (superstructure & all) back up on cribbing, and pull the belly pans to access the filters. At this point in the build that'd be a noticeable time set-back.

And I rather doubt Tournament'll re-schedule their parade for me.

Several of us independant builders have considered that very scenario.
If we could fit'em on the strip at the new 'Dale I swear we'd go for it.
Sadly, that shut-down area just plain wouldn't handle a pair of 18' wide floats "in full flower".
Hell, our bare chassis' are 10' wide.

Great. Provide data to refute the linked data proving K&Ns are garbage, and then your opinion will be worth messing with.

Until then...!

It won't matter for you, Mr. Rodder.

Dan two vehicales with over 100,000 one filter ,cleaned and oiled several times saved whole bunch of money on filters, stock replacement around $40/k&n $50...the amount of dirt you are talking about getting thru is so small...not worth the worry

Lots of info on this topic on the web. You can always send an oil sample to a lab and they will tell you about your K&N.

…and no data. What you have there, son, is a couple of anecdotes. We humans -- all of us -- are really bad at interpreting what we think we see. Often we see what we want to see, even if we have the best of intent. That's why anecdotal reports are useless. That's why smart and thoughtful people base decisions on facts and data obtained scientifically.

Mr. Rodder?

Thanks, Lou, I needed that.

Yeah, as long as no material migrates for the next 6 months (about 15 hrs), I'm good. Just glad to hear no Fram stories on the K&Ns.

Actually, they may well be more open. They each did produce an immediate bump in oil pressure over a new Wix, suggesting less filtration. As the sensor appears to be after the filter in slant pump flow, I'll want to map one sometime to verify.

Running it once a year would be OK with a Walmart Tech filter. I think they are better than Fram!
