I'm new here, obviously, I've just bought a D100 sight unseen and (to an extent at least) I'm paying the price.

It won't run. I'm flying in from Australia this week to drive it from coast to coast and then ship it out here. It has this carby:

We don't know what sort of carby that is, but it's been 'rebuilt' and then fiddled with so it is probably the problem.

The engine idles only very slowly (as you pour in gas...) and will only run for twenty seconds or so, I'm told. The other suggestion is that it might need a timing chain.

I know it's difficult to diagnose these things over the 'net, but can anyone offer concrete advice on it?

And if I need a carby that will make the truck run, is there anyone around south-central Indiana can help out? Are there likely to be any in wrecking yards in the area?

Look forward to some positive replies... and thanks in anticipation.

That's a Holley 1945 carby. From your description it likely is at least a large chunk of the problem. If you require a new or as-new carby for your truck, send me a PM. You are unlikely to find a carby in serviceable condition in a wrecking yard anywhere near Indiana in 2012.

Send me a PM anyhow; I am almost certain I have a couple of other specific bits that will greatly facilitate your use of that truck once it's home with you in OZ.

Is the carby getting fuel? You might have a bad pump if it only runs ~20 seconds after you stop adding gas to it.

Congrats on joining the slanted world. Good luck on your "new" truck!

Bad pump, bad carb/stuck inlet valve, fuel hoses upstream of the pump sucking air, clogged fuel tank pickup, clogged fuel filter- take your pick- one or more of the above.

You're very brave to plan on an extended road trip in an unknown, untested, (possibly unsafe?) vehicle. I HOPE that you're going to have basic steering- suspension- brakes checked out when (if?) you get this truck running. Do you have an alternate plan if things don't work out?

I don't want to be too negative, but old cars & trucks are, well, OLD- & can have lots of problems that usually take a fair amount of time &/or money to sort out.
Good luck to you

If it is the same Ray Bell (and it is) - so is he old. Nearly as old as me, and that is almost prehistoric.

regards,Rod.
And Ray, fuel pump IS a likely suspect. Sold my VC by the way.
:D Good luck with your Slant.
