The box that had my new rings came in had them sectioned off my which ring goes where. Of course, they spilled out while in a bigger box. I know where the oil ring goes but I can't find out where the other two flat rings go. They both can fit the other two grooves in the piston despite one being bigger than the other. And no, I don't have the old pistons here with me to see.

What type of compression rings do you have? The top and second are likely different. http://www.hastingsmfg.com/ServiceTips/ring_types.htm

Are they plain, chrome or moly? The plated or moly ring will be the top ring.

I ordered the rebuild kit for an unmodified, stock engine (other than the .40 over) so I'm thinking that it should be plain. The thin and flimsy ring is rectangular. It's shiny around the edges but I don't think it's chrome plated. The thicker, stouter ring is dull and dark and resembles the "torsional compression ring type 102" seen in that handy diagram. I hope that describes them well enough. If not, I can try to attach a pic.

Is there a "dot" on those rings? If so, on which side? (ref. the inside edge chamfer to dot relationship)

The other "silver sided" ring sure sounds like a moly filled, top ring to me.

I just realized that I majorly goofed up in the description.

Here we go (with exception to the 6 "wavy" rings):

Hastings Set

12 of the thin, rectangle, shiny-edged rings. I don't know what they're made of.

6 of the dark, thick, rectangle rings...no dots.

6 more dark, thick rings... with dots and with slight tapper on upper, inside edge (like the "torsional compression ring type 102").

Hopefully this better describes what I have. What a mess!

This might help, from Hastings- "Correct Compression Ring Installation";

http://www.hastingsmfg.com/ServiceTips/ ... lation.htm

FYI: I was just looking up Hasting rings for the 225 yesterday and learned their numbering:
2C687 = Chrome top ring
2M687 = Moly Top Ring
687 = Plain

Type 126, COMPRESSION,TAPER FACE,REV TORS is the #2 ring.
Type 032, (if this is a plain 687 set) COMPRESSION,BBL FACE is the #1 ring.

The dot always goes to the top. The #2 ring since it's a torsion ring, has to go in the proper way so it will have a dot for sure.

Okay, I believe I understand now. The plain rectangular ring goes in the 1st groove from the top. The tapered ring goes into the 2nd groove from the top (with dot facing top) and the 12 thin rings go on both sides of the wavy oil ring.

Does that sound right? And thanks for all the help.

Yes and go to the Hastings web site to get the installation instructions if you've lost yours.
