Thanks. I've never had to clean a carb so many times in my life... I just knew that it wasn't getting enough fuel and had to choke it down to compensate. Was 100% there wasn't a vacuum leak.

Too double check passages for debris I use hard mono fishing line in various diameters. You would be surprised at the corrosion and debris that have come out......
You need to treat a carb rebuild like surgery....keep everything super clean! and work in a clean environment.

Fixed. I believe something was seriously jammed in a port somewhere. I've carb sprayed and shot air through every passage literally 10 times. And spray and air would come out other ends. So it had to have been clean right? Doesnt seem like it. Turned the compressor to 180psi and used an entire can of carb cleaner and blasted evetything literally 30+ more times. Nothing different.... everything still coming out as it was before. But I bolted the thing on one last time and ran like a champ. Rough idle is gone from shaft leak too! Thanks for all the input guys.I've rebuilt hundreds of carbs for vws. Solex, weber, dellorto... never had a problem like this before.

Ps that idle jet is a mother &#@% to get out... warming up the carb does the trick.
Don't you just HATE it when something clears up like that and it's a complete mystery what made the darn thing work this time?? I've always wanted to know what I did that fixed it - that way knowledge is increased. When it just mysteriously clears up I'm happy for that, but frustrated at the same time.

i am so frustrated and irritated about this POS. i bought the carb here from a member here, he telling me it is a bitchen vintage rebuild, i was fighting with this thing from day 1. always ran rough, found out i was chasing my tail because of very worn throttle shaft. i fixed the shaft, then this horror has started. when i finally got it to work, i was happy, but it was still a bit rough for what it should have been. now it wont run unless choke is closed again, and nothing i can do will fix it.

tuesday i will go to my buddys shop, and soak the entire body in his solvent tank, and blow air through it at same time, bring a bunch of fishing line as a member commented about (i fish from time to time, so that works) and give it one last horrah. if this will not fix it...... i will need to find a correct NOS carb asap. if anyone has one please let me know. its for a 65 auto valiant 225 no A/C

Yup, hard mono fishing line in various weights or a small "E" string off a guitar.

So after a day of soaking in solvent, blasting with lots of psi through out the day, get home to find out IT DID NOT HELP. I am 100% sure its not a intake leak. Brand new gaskets (several times) they are the correct ones aswell. It will only run on choke almost completely closed. It seems it's not getting enough fuel at idle. Does not pop when reving high rpm seems to be fine when rpms are up and choke is open. What the hell do I do now? I need a new carb I guess. I was thinking of drilling out all the passage plug, then boil the carb in a 50/50 mixof water and vinegar for a short period of time. Buy where do I find the plugs to reveal?

Silly question maybe, but ARE you getting enough fuel?
Maybe your fuel pump is giving out.

Maybe not so silly!!!!

When I first go my 74 there was so much rust in the engine fuel line. The clear Purolator filters would turn to rust in a day or so.....Fuel pump was loaded....

Did the fuel line mode, added a fuel water separator, new fuel pump and fuel pressure gauge.

Made a huge difference in how the car runs.

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33102 From the bbs manual. Page 7 Parts list no 36 step-up piston gasket. Walker has different ones rubber and fiber. A leak here can cause poor idle. In the piston down position the gasket prevents vacuum leak. Also page 3 Low speed circuit. In the circuit diagram [Idle restriction] looks like that could clough up. To the left is a clean out plug. Idle restriction is .052
