Okay so this is one of those measure twice cut once situations. I just want to verify the process.

Disconnect the battery
Disconnect "accessories"
A. AC
B. Wiring
C. Radiator / Heater hoses
Remove 4 bolts to the flex plate
Remove bolts to engine mounts

Lift engine out.

You've glossed over a few steps.
1) Take reference pictures of everything.
2) Assemble several ziploc bags & cheap tupperware tubs with labels to hold hardware.
3)Disconnect battery-remove starter.
4)Drain coolant from radiator & engine block.
5)Drain oil & remove filter.
6)Disconnect & plug fuel line at pump.
7)Dismount A/C comp & secure aside (you can remove if system is already empty).
8)Dismount power steering pump & secure aside (if equipped).
9)Remove raidiator & heater hoses(plug trans cooler lines).
10)Disconnect throttle cable/linkage (& trans kickdown)
11)Remove alternator (if you want) & disconnect remaining wires to engine.
12)Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold & brace.
13)Remove inspection cover & torque converter bolts.
14)Support trans & attach eng hoist. (might need to remove hood)
15)Remove eng to trans bolts & eng mount bolts.
16) Lift away.

Make sure to remove the starter (you don't have to unwire it, just unbolt it and lay it in the battery tray).

Remove the radiator completely for a little extra room (and just in case the engine slips...)

You also have to remove the rear bellhousing bolts on the topside of the bellhousing, and remove the ones from the front (including the two on the 'wing' from the drivers side of the block to the bellhousing). Make sure to also remove the bellhousing inspection plate.

Good luck,

-D.idiot

I have everything ready except transfer bell house bolts and engine mounts but I am having a problem can I remove the flex plate bolts from the starter location or how do I do it? I ask because I tried and I can not get a closed box wrench or socket around it. I can get a open box wrench but the engine wants to roll as soon as I put any torque on it.

I like doing it from the bottom. Take off the inspection cover and go for it....
I generally use a long handled box end wrench. You can wedge a large screw driver in there to keep it from rotating.

Must be pretty low on compression.... :(

Unfortunately I thinkiI'm running on 5 cylinders. Number 1 has a gouge in the wall allowing blow by. This and a crack in the block is why I am building a 10.8:1 motor right now. I am hoping she will be ALOT zippyer.

Thanks for the advice I can will give it a try. I believe the last time I looked for the inspection plate I could not find it. Did all automatic 904 transmissions have it?

Yes!

When your under the engine pan and look at the front of the transmission. There is a Quarter Moon shaped piece of tin covering the torque converter held on with two bolts. It is a dirt/dust shield. If it is not there you will see the the torque converter teeth.

Gentleman I want to say thank you. Had anyone suggested 3 years ago that I would be pulling this engine I would have said you are crazy. If you see my legs sticking out from under a car call 911 something terrible has happened.

I would suggest some sort of support for your transmission if nothing better than some small rope under the bellhousing tied off to the two torsion rods, that will help keep the convertor from sliding off. By the way your garage looks somewhat like mine.

I will definitely do that but truthfully the car is tilted WAY WAY back so I do not expect anything to slide forward. Also the transmission rolled towards the passenger side when I got the engine out any suggestion to straighten it?

When you get to the point of re-installing engine put a small 8" square of plywood under the trans pan and with a small jack under the wood start jacking and the trans should go to a more correct position.
