Drove the Dart to work today. On the way home I thought I could make a traffic light so I floored it but quickly changed my mind and his the brakes. The car then puttered and died as it came to a stop. Wouldn't start.

Some helpful people pushed me aside into the Jack in the Box parking lot where I popped the hood to take a look. Took off the air filter. Tried starting again. Still wouldn't start. Checked the Dizzy and other connections. All where correct. Checked the fuel line. Good. Let it sit for about 3 or 4 minutes and tried again and it turned over a few times and wanted to start but wouldn't. Waited another few minutes and tried again. Fired up.

Did I flood it? Pardon the ignorance but I've never owned a Carb'd car so this is new to me. I didn't have any issues with any other stops this morning on streets or freeway(tho there wasn't any traffic so I didn't have any sudden stops). Any way to stop this from happening? I can't imagine this being good if it did happen in traffic. Being stuck blocking a lane is like my biggest fear.

Is that still a Holley 1920 in '72 (assuming the car in question is the '72 Dart in your signature)?

Personally, I never had that sort of trouble with my Holley on my '70 225. If it would not clear with repeated tries with the throttle held wide open, I'd be more suspicious of spark...ballast or ECU (if you have one).

Correct 1920 in the 72.

I just discovered the Wide Open throttle to clear it quicker thing today, So I was just trying to start it like normal.

I played with it a little last night and couldn't make it do it again on my street on flat land.

I think I just got lucky and being that I was on a slight hill and flooring it and instantly stopping probably got way too much fuel in the bowl and that + the angle killed it.

Hopefully it won't happen again, but if it does at least now I know about the wide open throttle to get air in there.

Since I couldn't duplicate it I'm not gonna mess with my float as some other pages recommended.

Had you driven far enough that the choke plate was wide open and still not partially closed? Sometimes a lazy choke will make the problem worse if it is still on or partially closed.

On cold start up you should have a 3/16 gap on the choke plate, not fully closed! or it can flood a cold engine. It happened to me yesterday on start up! In this heat, you wouldn't think it would even engage! My choke was nearly slammed shut all the way. I readjusted the linkage and all is well.

Choke plate gap specs are found in the Engine FAQ section. You can down load the setup sheet for your carb.

Thanks for the tips. Choke was completely open when I pulled the airfilter. 30 minute drive home from work, and its the new electronic choke that opens super quickly. It's been working tip top and when installed I gapped it to about a pencil width and she starts really easy.

Good!

Sometimes you can get some debris stuck between the needle and seat and the fuel won't shut off or stop.....

Hope you get it cleaned out and have many happy miles of driving!
