Is it normal for the rod bolts to fall out of the rods on a 170?

Just one of the mysteries of this block. First I though it was a 225 block, I was told that it was by person that I got it from and they are usually reliable.

Then I noticed the crank didn't look quite right. Then I noticed the pistons were at the top of the bore when removing them. It also looks like it munched a distributor gear some time in the past.

I have most of the parts for a short block. But what am I going to do with a 170...

How long was the water pump to head hose?
How long are the rods (center of small end to center of big end)?

To answer the original question, it is not unusual for rod bolts to fall out of stock, used rods, no matter what CID.
