what all cars came w/ sbp disc brakes? I'm guessing they would be older than 73 for some reason, and probably only slant cars, but I really don't know. Does anyone have some info on this? Thanks in advance

SBP (small bolt pattern) discs were Kelsey Hayes 4 piston set up....anything from a Slant 6 Valiant to the wild 340 Duster had these. You can find these on A-body cars like Darts/Demons/Scamps/Valiants/Dusters and Barracudas etc. Since they were available on so many models there is no sure-fire way to tell by looking at the outside of the car that it has these brakes. You must inspect and confirm it by viewing the brakes themselves. These were available from '65 through '72 model years. Note that the Barracuda changes to E-body platform in 1970 so you will find the SBP discs up through the 1969 model year.

OK, let's start at the beginning- AFAIK only A-body compact cars had sbp (5 on 4") wheels- originally 13" diameter, so they start in 1960. In 65 the option for Kelsey-Hayes 4-piston caliper disc brake showed up. You could get discs on /6 or V8 cars- more often on upscale or hi-trim/optioned models. They kept this design thru 72.

In 73 Chrysler changed the A-body disc setup- it used bbp wheels (which saved money as most Mopars used bbp) & used Chrysler parts- not K-H. Since front drums were on the way out, they kept sbp for the few 73+ (4-wheel) drum cars rather than redesign them for bbp.

You won't find K-H discs on a Dart Sport unless someone took the time to swap out their 9 or 10" drums for the K-H brakes (Dart Sport replaced the Demon in 1973 until it's demise in 1976).

So for 'stock' installations the list could be:

Barracuda up to 1969 model year
Valiant to 1965-1972
Dart 1965-1972
Demon (can include sizzler model and 340)
Duster 1970-1972 (gold Duster and variants-340 duster, twister, etc...)

These are rare in junkyards fetching some premium prices, the LBP brakes are now getting somewhat rare (hunters now prize the spindles and leave the rest for the crusher). You will also need a set of 14"+ SBP rims if you don't have them already.

I have the rims, as they are the reason I'm wanting to keep the sbp (14" ansen sprint wheels, aluminum mag slot)

also, some more questions are:

Are the Kelsey-Hayes versions better than the earlier Chrysler unit? I'm assuming so...

And, how popular are sbp 8.25 rears? Did they make those into 76? Probably not, huh?

And thank you for all the helpful information, those that replied so quickly!

OK DI you got me on the Dart Sport...good catch....as the Dart Sport started in '73. My mistake. This car would have the single piston caliper and obligatory 4.5" (LBP) bolt pattern if optioned with disc brakes.
Thanks to DI I made corrections to my original post.

The K-H brakes in good repair are OK and comparible to the later Chrysler single piston disc brakes (floating and slider), but sometimes a piston does get 'stuck' (on occasion).

There are no 8.25" SBP the are all LBP (being offered for A-body from 1973-1976 only), the 8 3/4" stock for the A-body will be a SBP axle (modified rear axles can be LBP though).

Any SBP axle in the 1973-early 1976 stock would be a 7 1/4" axles (for 9" and 10" drum brake equipped cars up to 1-1-76 build date).

just looked at your photos-- that is a nice looking car.

putting the old style kh disc brakes on would also require you to change your upper control arms to the smaller ball joint style-- I have some spares in Kansas if you want to trade for your larger ones.

you might want to research scarebird brake conversions--- they can keep your small bolt pattern-- not sure if any other aftermarket kit does that.
a local has an "A" body 8.75 rear for sale (wichita Ks) keeps sbp

anyhow keep up the nice work, Lawrence

Thanks on the compliment, but I'm afraid the dart don't look like that anymore :(

I got rear ended while I was stopped (have no clue how fast the other dude was going, faster than the 25mph zone we were in, that's for sure) its in pretty bad shape right now... As in rear quarters crumpled out, body twisted, subframe bent, trunk floor wrinkled, rear wheel housings crumpled, and enough give overall to push the engine fan into the radiator.

Needless to say, I've got a bit of work before me to get her all fixed up and lookin good. In the meanwhile I plan to upgrade the suspension, I have an engine I'm almost done rebuilding, I'd like to get a wide ratio 904, and maybe do some lightening on the body. Also, some aero mods inspired by Sam Powell and aesthetic changes.

Thank you for the offer on the upper control arms, I'll keep that in mind when I get farther into the conversion. I'll also look into the scarebird conversion.
