Hey guys, Happy New Year!
I am getting antsy to work on my car, I want to get the engine and tranny back into the car.
I have both on the floor asking every day to be installed.
I am wondering what the consensus of the forum is on installing the engine and tranny together or separately.
My preference is to install the together so I can hook up all the stuff as I install.
What has worked best for you, install tranny first then the engine or install them as one operation?
Thanks folks.
John

no problem with tranny on

done autos and manuals in and out

I know the slant engine will want to tip whenoff the ground

so make sure its balanced with the lifting rig you are using

as long as you adjust the angle half way in IF

the gearbox housing starts to hit the ground and drag

what type of lifting gear are you using

if using chains no problem

if using threaded adjusting bar no problem

Thanks Dirty. I have a adjusting engine lift that attaches to the head with chains at the two holes for lifting and I am able to tilt back and forth with it.
If I use the two lift points on the head it should be level with a little cheating dont you think?
Thanks again.

I pulled my engine without the tranny, and reinstalling it was a breeze. Maybe it's just me, but there's no way I would have wanted to deal with trying to steady a transmission as well.

Maybe if you have a crazy multi-arm cherry picker, but I would just install the tranny, and then the engine.

My very humble opinion, of course. :?

yes thats the right gear to do a motor

you raise the motor ..swing the tranny into the engne bay

it drops in ...roll back crane adjust tilt angle

lower and roll back slowly

after its past the radiator bar

all you do is jack the gearbox up so its level( with a trolly jack)
till engine mounts are reached

this is the one i always use with chains

I removed and installed the engine separately a few months back. First time I've pulled an engine and it was pretty straight forward. Fouled a few times on the gear box but with a bit of pushing and pulling it found its place.

Goodluck!

If it's an automatic you can do it either way, with a manual it's easier to do it as one unit since the input shaft is a long and may not line up when trying to dog the engine/bell/clutch together in the engine bay...

Using the two bolt points on the head is the best/easiest pick point for the install (and the pull).

Good luck,

If you install them together make sure the car is up high enough that you have room to get them in far enough to start tilting it. The cherry picker is going to have to lift quite high to get the right tilt on it as well and still clear the radiator support... Ive found it to be alot easier overall to install them seperate on any car Ive done. The slant with a trans attached is a very loooong, heavy and akward peice to deal with.

But enough man power, a few beers, busted knuckles and persistance, anything is possible :D

With an automatic, separate has been much easier with that lift pictured. I can do the job myself no problem......with help it's even quicker. I use one of those engine angle adjusters on the lift that has a lead screw and crank it to adjust the angle to tip the engine for alignment to the torque converter.
I also just use two head bolts. I have done the remove and install many times. :D :D :D

I guess I am looking for the best way to keep from tearing up all the hard work I went through to get the engine compartment cleaned and painted over the summer.
I got the engine out by myself but it was a bit of a task to keep it from banging around the compartment.
Back in my early years I did all my engine pulling by myself. VW bug and other assorted six cylinders. Most fun was an old Anglia I had with a flat head 4, pulled it by hand with no life. Worst was my 71 pancake VW engine in the driveway, made up some new cuss words for that one. Probably why I have a bad back now.
Seems to be more votes for separate for manageability over both at the same time. Sounds like it would be the best.
Now caveats? I know the flexplate and torque converter alignment are a concern, anyone think of more to add?
Thanks for the input guys! Love the forum for info.

If doing it as a single unit, jacking up the back helps slide it in without banging around much (it's a roll and stab)...Having a helper to guide the tranny tail shaft helps as well...if concerns about the finish are paramount, I cover the finshes with some old blankets (over the fender, etc) and use some wood (1x6,2x4, etc...) between the engine and the blanket so it takes the brunt of any mishaps if they occur...

You shouldn't have this problem if it's done separately, you will have lots of work under the car, before getting back to the top (i.e. covertor and flex plate alignment, tranny lines, speedo cable, etc..)

Good luck on the install.

Never had a problem with that when using the engine leveler like that guy has his hand on......they are real handy. I just crank it till the engine is parallel and slides into the converter, and drop the lift down a little at a time. Get one, you will like it! Like i said, I can do the job by myself when using one of those.

I usually slide a couple of bolts through at the top of the xmission case and get them started. Then install the rest and then do the motor mounts. Make sure the front of the tranny isn't nose down, but up a little.
