I will be installing a GM HEI 4 pin module. I'm going to locate it away from the engine heat. Will mounting it say 6.5 feet away from the distributor affect it's performance. I've got an A100 pickup. That's about the distance to under the dash.

I have mine mounted just behind the alternator and it works just fine for me. Be sure to use heatsink compound and a heat sink and you should be good.

GM mounted them inside the distributor at the back of the engine, you might be to cautious.

Yeah, I know. GM used them in vans a lot of heat. Just thought keeping away from heat would be better, But what do I know ?

And there are basically no inner fenders to speak of on an A100. Thought of mounting it to the outside of the battery box. Might be a pain under the dash.

I think if you make a bracket you should be able to mount it and the coil where the old coil used to be. I thought about it but decided easier access.

Closer to the distributor is best, it reduces the chance of RFI from disturbing the signal from the pick-up to the module. They are designed to withstand alot of hear, be more cautious of mounting it somewhere it is insulated to dissipate heat, stays dry, and has a good solid ground source.

That's what I wanted to know. I may build a sealed metal box with a heat sink . And use reflective insulation to cover the box. Mount it all to the back inside of the engine box.

The original ACDelco HEI heat sink piece has part number 10474610, pricerange $12-15, looks like this:



For V8 applications, there is a guy on eBay who makes a bracket/heat sink, to mount the module on the underside of the Mopar distributor, but there's no room for that on a SL6.
