Ok, so those that are tired of reading my posts about timing issues and stupid questions....stop and go somewhere else. I have a few more questions in general. I'm wearing out the fan and belt and MY HANDS trying to turn the engine to get TDC (BTC) for timing. SO, I look down at the balancer and there isn't a bolt. I cleaned it out (but I cant get to it to look inside it) and didn't feel a bolt attached to the dang thing. Did the engine come with one? I don't know.....I can stick my little finger in there and cant hit "bottom" inside the hole. Is that pressure fit on with a key only? just trying to figure out how else I could move the engine around less crossing over the solenoid.

so if I find this bolt, I should be able to screw it into the hole in the center and use it to turn the engine?

My 65 had so much rust and crap in there.
Took PB Blaster and small wire brushes to get it all out.

ok, my redneck logic tells me that if I put the bolt in and tighten it up, that I will only be able to turn the motor clockwise using the bolt head. Is that correct? will that damage anything?

No, if the bolt gets tight enogh and the engine gets "loose" (worn out) enough then the bolt will also turn the crank counter clockwise. No, turning the crank clockwise won't hurt anything considering that clockwise is the normal direction of crankshaft rotation.

strange, I got the 3/4-16 bolt and it seems that it is too big. any other ideas? ive sprayed the inside with pb blaster and used a small wired brush to get in there, but no luck.

That is fairly typical, If it has not had a bolt in it for 30 + years. I had a terrible time getting the one in my current race motor started at all. I finally got just a thread or two and kept working it back and forth. Then I put some never seize on it and ran it back and forth with an impact wrench for quite a while before I got it in the whole way. If you are just using a ratchet or wrench, you are in for a lot of work.

You could also buy a thread tap in that size... A little grease on it and run it in there... Be alot safer than jamming a bolt into it to clean the threads. Might cost you $10-$20 but it beats the hell out of damaging the threads in the crank...
