I'm talking by long distance with the owner of a slant 6, '62 Signet Auto, with a cast iron engine. The serial number indicates only that it's a Slant 6, not what size it is. How can I find out? It seems to him to be all original with less than 100K miles on it (rebuilt by second owner 3 yrs ago). Thanks.[/b]

Check the length of the short rubber hose connecting the water pump to the head. Mine is the pic is the 225 length . . . 170's are an inch shorter

170 has a lower deck height by 1". If you look at the front of the engine, where the water pump is, there is a small length of hose between the water pump and the head, the bypass hose. The hose on a 225 is about 2-2.5" long, on the 170 its about 1-1.5" long.

There is a pad of metal on the block, in back of the alternator, just above the bracket for the coil. Unless the block surface has been shaved before, the engine size and some other letters/numbers will be stamped there. You will likely have to clean up the area with a wirebrush and whipe it clean because of accumulated gunk over the years.

:lol: You guys are incredible. Not only good, sharp answers, but even a color photo so I could understand about the 1 inch deck height. Thanks a million, guys. I am glad you two are willing share your knowledge with dummies like me. I forwarded the message to the owner, and I'm sure he'll do a little measuring to figure it out. Thanks again.

Is that a picture of a newer slant six engine? I ask because I wish mine looked that nice, my engine has no paint anymore and the valve cover actually has a dent in it, and as for painting I unfortuneately sort of need my engine in my car currently.

Shiva about the age, well lets see now . . .
- the block is a 60 version
- the heads from a 76
- stripped the block & head completely in spring of 2002 before spraying with an epoxy primer and finishing with a couple of enamel spray bombs.

This is how it looked before I dropped it in.

none of us ever have new engines . . . every part has a different age

Yes, but they had slant's up into the eighties. I consider 80's newer, I never said new. I asks because the valve cover(at leasts that's what I think it is) looked like it was plastic with a plastic cap for where you put the oil in, I thought it might have been an eithies slant six.

That engine is absolutely gorgeous.

What is that large black mass below the intake manifold?

Also, is there any canadian source for Clifford speed equipment for the slant?

On the 1962 slant six, the engine number will tell you the size. It is on a machined pad below the head by the #1 cylinder. It is usually blocked by the alternator or, in Canada, the generator.

On American 1962 slant sixes, the prefix would be :
S17 - 170-cid
S22 - 225-cid
TS22 - Truck 225-cid
Following this, the month and day the engine was assembled.

For Canadian 1962 slant six engines :
SX - Valiant 170-cid
SX-HP - Valiant 225-cid
S - Plymouth or Dodge 225-cid
TS - Dodge or Fargo truck 225-cid
Following this is the sequential production number, with 1001 starting in 1960. I owned a 1965 Valiant with a SPN of over 1,000.000.


The "S" was for the year, and in Canada the "X" was for Valiant. Although Valiant is most commonly referred to as model "V", the 1960 Valiant was "X". Chrysler Canada never bothered changing the engine prefix in 1961.

I have a 62 Lancer. on the block, near the plate where the altenator resides closest to #1 on the block is printed R17 725.
So what is the R for ? Lancer?

On the other side of the block is a large number 2202843-7

and on the intake exhaust is printed 28899959

I know this is a 170, but I don't know much else. The engine looks like it was rebuilt at one time, not too long ago. The tranny appears new.
It smokes aweful, and clanks when I accelerate, so I am dropping in a later 225.

It would be nice to know a little history though, like if it is the original engine.

The R designates the 170 was assembled in 1961. The
7 25 is the month and the day. So the motor was assembled
in July on the 25th.

The other numbers from the block and the manifold
are the casting numbers.

If you still have the tall air cleaner that was stock on the early
Valiants and Lancers - Check the hood clearance carefully before
slamming the hood over the new 225. You may need to get a lower
air cleaner - like one from a 63 dart for example.
