Last weekend i tried something that helped with the sloppy shifting on the 46 year old column shift linkage.
Hanging off the passenger side of the master cylinder is a bracket with a heavy rubber pad attached to it. In my case, the rubber was long gone. The long shift linkage rods pass thru this bracket. My rods made a lot of noise when they moved. Metal on metal, ya know. So i cut a chunk from an old tire i have laying around and replaced the rubber pad. I made holes in the tire that were slightly smaller than the bracket holes. This effective raised the level of the link rods. It also took the weight of the rods off the column shifter arms. Shifting just got a lot cleaner, more positive an quieter.

Just thought i'd pass this along in case it could help anybody else..

D---!
