i'm piecing the 63 dart back from a roller, engine here, trans from there. engine starts and runs good!,, I did the cables install like the FSM says ( far as I know!).. I got a trunniion shaft. the pushbuttons did not want to pop in and out, so I took it out of the dash cleaned w ith with carb/brake cleaner. got it all moving and poping in and out . lubed with dry graphite and white grease. started the engine, I get drive and reverse, NO neutral.

funny part is, after it ran, I could not get the buttons to move, or could I make the bar move that the buttons push!!!!! after it sat a while I was able to get it working again!?????? can anyone tell me what the heck!!????????? thanks

I went back out, took both cables off, seems the park does not totally release the shifter mechanism. I see where there could be a short spring???????? I got the mechanism moving, the cables are still off, the gear cable seems to move freely the full way.

it is in Neurtal, ( I assume) or park?? but now I can get no movement out of the wheels,???? and that is with me movong the cable in and out!!!!!

Does the 63 dart have a separate park lever on the dash?
The only cable shifted trans I ever had was a 64 New Yorker.
It had a separate lever and cable for park.
I wonder if maybe your still stuck in park.
The wheels should spin no matter where the trans is unless the park pawl in the tail shaft stops it, or your drums & shoes are frozen.
The latter being a strong possibility since your buttons were stuck...

The '64 has a separate lever for Park, so I assume the '63 does as well.

Did you do the shift cable adjustment? Last time I installed the trans in my '64, it would only shift into neutral from a forward gear, but not from reverse. Adjusting the shift cable according to the FSM procedure (by spinning the little wheel where the cable goes into the transmission) fixed that.

It sounds like you might also have some issues with your push-button control unit binding up. When you say you disconnected both cables and there might be a spring missing, are you talking about the shifter side, or the transmission side?

If the spring on the trans side of the park cable is missing (inside the small parking lock housing on the tailshaft), then that could stop the parking pawl from disengaging... I think.

I'm not sure where on the mechanism you mean. Can you post a picture? When I get home I'll take a picture of the exploded view from my FSM and put it up here.

Yes... there is a round "coil" return spring that assists the PARK lever and cable.
The spring commonly breaks and / or missing from many push button units. A missing return spring leaves the PARK lever loose and prevents it from staying in the up (out of PARK) position.
