Hello,

Its my first post here. My name is Targo and im from Estonia :) Maybe someone can enlighten me if my car is burning oil or is it just normal. Car is plymouth fury 3 1965 225 cu in. It takes about 2 quarts of oil for 3000 miles. It runs fine and there is no blue smoke coming out of exhaust. I have not noticed any leaks either. I called mehanic and he told me its quite normal for such an old engine. When i bought it, (2-3 months ago ) it also had a LPG conversion. Car runs great with both. Any advice is appriciated.
Next question is not engine related but rather a car frame.

I am hardly an expert but i dont think its supposed to look like that. Looks like metal is cracked.

Welcome!

How many miles (or km) has this engine run?

The engine should not burn so much oil. Your mechanic is right that it is not unusual for an old engine to burn a lot of oil -- that is what happens when an engine is worn out. But it is not "normal"; it can and should be fixed. It is possible there are leaks you cannot easily see. For example, the oil pressure warning light switch can leak in a way that doesn't make a mess for evidence. The first thing to do is careful investigation to make really sure there are no leaks. Then it's time to check carefully for oil burning. What do the spark plugs look like?

I agree with you: the metal looks cracked, and it shouldn't.

Rather an odd place and run for a crack. Perhaps a wire brushing'd show an overlap and some welds.

it looks like s folder over seam with welds to me, not a crack

slants have lots of spots to leak oil from, a joke i heard once: "fill the oil and check the gas please"

is it a rear main seal and its only leaking while running and under load? you might not get a stain, but when you step on it to go up hill the blow by could push the oil out there. the oil pan and bottom of the timing cover look clean, how about the valve cover? try putting cardboard under it and run it for a bit, see if you spot anything

I agree with NEVjr, that looks like a weld and seam to me, yes, wire brush it and send another pic for us...

Estonia, cool! I had a college professor from Estonia, Vootele Vaska (philosopher); his older brother Lauri is a famous chemist.

Its hard to say how many miles. Odometer is broken. On paper it says engine was swapped out in 1999. Right now it shows 30k miles, but it might be 130k or even 300k. God knows. Il check all the other stuff in weekend when i have more time. Thanks for those quick replays.
