Im not sure how much the head has been cut but there is only about .030 of chamber wall on the intake side.Im getting ready to cc another rebuilt head of later vintage(mid 60's) and will see what that one will come out at.Things may be looking up.Ill post results tonite.

You should just mill more off the head or block.
These days I like to "split" the amount of material removal between the two surfaces but you don't have to do that.

I do like to have both the block and head surfaced so they are clean and flat, especially if you plan to use a shim gasket.

There is .375 to .500 thickness to the 170's block deck so taking .100 off is not a problem. I would only surface the block the amount needed to bring the piston to near zero deck. (shoot to leave it .003 to .005 negative and be sure the machine used to surface the block fixtures off the main line, not the oil pan rails.

OK,
I just cc'edc another head(known stock-mid 60's)and came up with 60 cc's!! I thought that stock heads were about 54 cc's at most.Could my syringe be off(its in milliliters but I thought that they were the same as cc's)anyway there is enough meat to remove at least a .125.
Im getting ready to go to the first cruise in of the year and maybe clear my mind alittle about all of this but Ill do the math tonite when i get home and go from there.Thanks alot guys. Ill repost soon.

If the valves get sunk deep into the seat / chamber or if the valves have large dips in their centers, you will get more volume.
Do a double-check, do the math, the numbers don't lie.

Neither head has sunken valves but thet both have valves with good size dips in the faces.

O.K.,
I just did the math and double and triple checked everything and if I shave head .126(I have enough meat to do it) it should come out at 9.14 compression ratio.Will this be enough?????

ON the 1960 head ,if I shave it .100 ,I will get 9.4 to 1 but it will be getting down to the "dot" between the valves so Im not sure what kind of effect this will have on combustion.Any thoughts on this???
BTW,my later head doesnt have the "dot" between the valves and has somewhat different shape.

hi, mill the head another .050-.o60 and cc results. slant heads can take .100 off without problems. roughly .007 off for every cc. , ron
