Hi everyone,

I have a '76 Dart with the 225,904, 2.71:1 rear combo. I have 2 quick questions that I hope you can answer.

1. My transmission pan leaks. Have tried 2 different gaskets, and none of them (neither the Fel-Pro or the Wix gaskets) sealed it. I believe the bolts are just overtorqued, so when I drop the pan next spring I plan to use the ball end of a ball peen hammer to bump the holes in the pan back out. Either way, what do you guys run for gaskets on a 904? I heard Felpro makes on with inserts in it for a dodge a555 which is the same pan shape as a 904, but I don't know what that part number is.

2. Rear end fluid. The stuff in my car is the original fluid (yuck). What weight fluid do you guys run in your cars? I have the 7 1/4 open rear end with 2.71:1 ratio. Also, is there a gasket to replace back there or should I just use RTV to seal it?

Are you sure it is coming from the pan? I went thru that before and found out it was the kickdown lever seal that was bad. It leaked down to the pan, and made the pan look like it was leaking.

I use the reusable plastic one from the dealer. Don't remember the part number though. But have taken off the pan many times, and the gasket is still good.

This is the heavy duty rubber/plastic (reusable) pan gasket made for the A500 type of trans but fits the A904.
I am also using a deeper trans pan made for the Jeep 904 trans. It's about an inch deeper than the standard 904 pan and a LOT cheaper than some of the deep pans I ran across.
I'll see if I can find the part number for that as well.

Yes, I have that one, it works great, pretty decently thick steel and you get an extra qt of fluid in your tranny and it has a drain plug.

They also sell a Summit aluminum deep one, 2 qt increase, but it's like 3.5" tall, the lip with the bolt holes in it is 1/2" thick alone. Great for a 4 x 4, but in a street car it would sit like 5" from the road...

Thanks for the replies. Yes I am sure it's coming from the pan. All around where the pan meets the tranny is damp.

That mopar part number is exactly what I was looking for. Hope to tackle that leak soon!

Get that nice Mopar gasket, yes, but also get a new pan. Don't take chances or waste money on "who the hell knows" aftermarket quality; nice, sturdy new deep pans with unwarped rails can be had as Chrysler part № 52118 779AD, and they even include a spiffy magnet to catch metallic shavings.

I think if I do replace the pan I'll put for the Chrysler one. My plan was to just use a hammer to flatten the edge of the pan around the bolt holes and install a new gasket.

There are a bunch of these new on eBay for around $35-$40 free shipping. That is way cheaper than the aftermarket ones. And get the nice gasket Dan recommends. I got one a few years back and it is a NICE gasket.
