I have a '63 D500 truck that has a slant 6 and manual transmision. The clucth is out of it and I have a couple of industrial 727s around.

Thought it would be a good idea to install the auto .

What I've run into is trying to figure out what flex plate I need to use - looks like there are 4 different ones from Pioneer, none of which fit tight around the crank pilot. The crank pilot measures 1.96" and the pilots in flex plates measure 2.15". I always thought that that should be a snug fit?

The other issue I have is the current torque converter nose is too large to pilot in crank. The OD measures about 1.8" and the pilot in crank is about 1.54". Looks like there are 3 options for torque convertors with 1.55 noses. But then 2 have 122 teeth and the other 148, the manual's ring gear has 172 teeth. The the other difference on torque covnerters is input splines - 27 or 18?

Any ideas on what will fit together?

Troy

The 1967 and older engines have the smaller crank pilot the only 727 auto set up for them i know of used an adapter plate to bolt the 225 to smallblock v8 727 and had a crank spacer adaptor wich allowed you to use the big hole flexplate and big pilot convertor.

So I need to find an adapter plate the goes between the block & transmission and then a spacer that will take up that distance and also pilot into the smaller crank pilot & step up to the larger torque converter nose?

Any ideas where to start looking for those parts?

Wildcat Auto Wrecking in Oregon ( www.wildcatmopars.com ) Not cheap, but they might have a complete adapter set

Do a web search for other Mopar only wrecking yards. THe adapter you areloking for was used in pre-67 Mopars only. Most commonly A100 trucks and vans, but also in the oddball fleet vehicles like taxis and police vehicles that were ordered with a six cylinder.

Easiest thing to do will be use an early Slant flexplate and have a custom converter built with the right pilot and bolt pattern.

The adapter plates use a small block transmission.

All the adaptors i have found were in the a and d 100. Then you might want to use the a518 overdrive automatic thats what o use the adaptors for

That would do the trick, especially if any of your other A-727's are slant six versions from the 70's or early 80's....

122 Teeth would be normal for a "slant six A-727" and convertor... this combination would also require a normal 10 tooth reduction gear starter like the late vehicles got...

Your manual Transmission is probably the 11" clutch with low mount direct drive 9 tooth starter for the NP-435 transmission for 172 teeth...

One other issue that may rear it's head... Typically in the early 60's truck the manual bellhousing was supported by pair of ears on the bell that bolted to a set of biscuit mounts to the frame and no rear/tailshaft crossmember support... If you put in a newer automatic, you will need to remove the mounts, and may need to weld in a crossmember to properly and positively support the later tranny...

If your A-727's are for big block applications then none will bolt up since no adaptor exists to go from B/RB block to slant....

11" clutches are still readily available over the counter in common 23 spline x1" and you can use 383 clutches from performance applications with this pattern as well ... but I'm not sure if your transmission has the dreaded 10 spline on 1" in which case, the choice gets very limited....
