The head gasket arrived today!
Thanks!!!

I have been dealing with my back being out big time and on top of it I ended up with a sinus headache all day today.

Talk about one miserable individual. Today was a total loss as far as working goes. I did manage to get the TDC marked as best I could - and I hope it is totally at the TDC spot too! It appears to be ass close to top as I can get it, but it is rather hard to turn the whole thing by hand, there is no bolt in the block for me to grab with a wrench and turn.

If everything is better tomorrow, I will be continuing to work on getting the block scrapped and ready for the gasket and head...

Again, thanks for the gasket...
later,
dan

I used 3 grade 8 bolts in the front pulley to turn the engine over.

See if your pulley has the 3 bolt holes.

5/16 normal threads if I remember correctly.....

I can feel a single hole in the center of the crank area - seems like a fine thread from what my finger feels? Lol

I guess I need to find a mirror and try to see what it is. It would be nice to have a bolt in there to try and turn this thing.

It's not easy to move it a little at a time to get the TDC correct without slipping past it one way or the other. I still have to mark the damper - so I can turn the motor and do the valve adjustments while it's cold. Once it starts running and warms up, I can set the valves with it running, like I am used to doing.

I don't remember setting it while it was cold and static before so have to read up on it.

I also need all the numbers for torqueing the head and rack down along with the IE bolts - although my torque wrench doesn't do the lighter measures of the IE bolts, I will just have to tighten them to where they feel tight enough I guess.

Although, harbor freight has torque wrenches on sale - so maybe I should go get one of the smaller lighter number ones???

You can also find these in junkyards in most Pre-1990's mopars with small blocks... last 2 I pulled were from a mid-80's diplomat, and from a late-80's truck... both 318 equipped. Bring an assortment of large wrenches as the head size bounced back and forth over the years (between 1 3/16" and 1 3/8")...

any later than that and things get metric and don't work so well...

I am no where near a junk yard no would I even attempt to go find one!!!
LOL

I'll just try auto parts, lowes or home despot!!!

I measured the water in one of my valve chambers - 59cc's...

I have the piston heads cleaned of carbon deposits and have started working more on the block deck now to clean it as much as I can.

Slow but steady... okay more like slow and really slow... lol

For those of you following the saga of the $1600+ head repair and replacement, I just came from a shop that specializes in doing them - and they are very familiar with mine. According to the guy there, my head is in almost perfect shape! He said he would not touch it because he could not get it any closer. No valves are burned and no valves are leaking...I was right in my measurements and right in my assessment of what was wrong and what it would take to fix it!

He used their steel straightedge and tried to get a .002 feeler gauge under it and could not anywhere on the head.!!!

The gasket set you sent arrived this afternoon Reed! Thanks again...

Now I get to put it all back together and hope I do that part correctly again! LOL

What are the torque #'s for the head bolts and the rocker bolts and the IE nuts?

Thanks for the help guys...
later,
dan

See: http://www.dutra.org/doug/draft-webpage ... -chart.htm

Also, on the head, you tighten from the center outward, alternating as you go out. Anytime you are tightening a long item down, you work from center to ends, not the other way around. See sequence here: http://tinyurl.com/hhkm6rq

Picked up some copper gasket sealer for the IE side of things.

So, the head bolts appear to be torqued at 70lbs. (I for some reason always thought 90?

Still not sure of the rocker assembly though...

Dan, I usually go 80-85 pounds. Generally I do and then after one heat cycle I recheck the head bolts.

On the exhaust/intake manifold gasket the Remflex gasket is the best way to go, it doesn't require any sealant and it won't leak, it has lots of crush to make up for misalignments in the manifolds (within reason). It costs a bit more but is well worth it. It is Remflex part number 6008, you can get it on amazon for $35 and free shipping at the moment.

Thanks Brian,
If the Remflex is gray, about 1/8" thick - then that's what my last gasket was...
Have no mullah for that this time around.
Had the surfaces of those checked too and they are so straight, the head guy said don't touch em!

I'm gonna put ultra copper gasket stuff on it and slap it together and hope for the best...lol

I just came back from the parts store because the guy gave me the wrong valve cover gasket!

Freekin dufus!!! lol

Hey!

I forgot - which way do the triangle washers sit?

The bump in towards the head?

Or out away from it?

LOL - I remember the location they all go...
