Hey guys, I am still needing to adjust air mixture screws on my Carter BBD. I just want to make sure I got this straight, screwing the 2 screws outward introduces more air into the mix. Right? Screwing screws inward reduces the air mix.

nope....

the screws control fuel.

All the way in will shut the fuel off . It wrecks the screws if you get heavy handed. A light touch please.

About 1 1/2 to 2 turns out is where to start.

Use a vacuum gauge to tune.

Out is richer (more fuel)

Work toward a nice even idle at 600 rpm with max vacuum.

Great thanks for the info. So I went ahead of turned in both screws 1/2 turn inward. No change. I then turned another 1/2 turn in and the engine began to bog down. So I turned it back out 1/2 turn.

Did some driving, and I noticed that the car was having trouble starting from a hot engine. ??? Is that by coincidence or could adjusting those screws to be leaner cause the engine to have trouble starting.

BTW at the exact same time as turing the screws in, I also changed my voltage regulator. but I dont think that could have anything to do with it?

Reason I am trying to lean out the mix, is there is serious carbon at my exhaust, and all over my spark plugs. Also gas mileage is pretty bad.

Those are idle mixture screws are they not?

I'm guessing it has nothing to do with idle.
You are on the right track though.
You are running rich.
What plugs are you using?

As bboogieart suggested if your not firing adequately it may appear to be a rich mixture. Start with confirming your coil wire voltage then move on to spark plug wire voltage before whipping out hand tools and new parts.

If you have secondary voltage out of range it may be appropriate to focus on correcting an ignition component Coil wire secondary voltage range should be 3000 to 10,000 depending on whether you have the plug gap at stock or spread to .045.

Let us know what you find for the next possible step....ie. furnish plug gap and measured secondary voltage in each plug wire and coil wire.
