My son acquired a 1966 Dart with the slant six. It's been years since I've encountered one of these. I'm a retired auto mechanic so I'm not entirely lost. The distributor is loose in the hole in the block. We bought a new distributor due to issues with the one that was in the engine ( it was loose also). I've never encountered this issue with any distributor in my 50+ years of auto work. Any ideas on why this is happening would be helpful. I find it hard to believe that the hole in the block has been worn oversize.

Is the o-ring on the distributor housing where it goes in the block?

Yes. It's there just as it came on the new dist.

When I get a break in the rainy weather, I'm going to pull the dist and mic the hole and shaft to see if there is appreciable wear (even though there shouldn't be any on the block).

If it's a reman/Cardone, it may not be the correct O-ring... or there may be slots for 2 depending on the year...

The other question also is, is the large donut O-ring present under the hold down?

If it's a reman, you will need to map the curve, all the points distributor curves are less than stellar for best power and mpg, and you will have to know how much curve they afforded you so you can set a better initial (the factory settings go out the window unless it's a known OEM distributor.

Where can these be found to buy if at all?

I got mine in my engine rebuild kits.... I have not seen one as an individual part number from Fel-pro, etc... in a while (if it is listed the counter guy will typically say "It's no longer carried".)

Most likely you will be needing to take the old petrified one and match it at a shop that either has a nice row of bins with various O- rings, or you may have luck at a fluid connectors place (pump rebuilders, hydraulic guys, etc)...

The only one that's supposed to be there is the thin one in the groove and that is for oil sealing. If in doubt, check the factory service manual that is viewable from AllMopar.

How loose are you considering "loose". they do not fit real snug to start with. There should be a chamfer at the top of the hole. The big o-ring described earlier goes against the base of the distributor housing and centers it in that chamfer.

There wasnt one on the distibutor when we pulled it, and there wasnt one in the rebuild kit....

It sure looks like there SHOULD be one there to us....we reassembled without but I think there is a little oil seepage there....we did replace the one on the lower groove....which i would have thought was the MAIN oil sealing groove....but elsewhere here it was said that running without it usually results in some oil leakage there.

I could not find the lower o-ring anywhere. Parts house had no listing, as best as I could determine it isn't a std. o-ring size. Had to buy a chinese dist. just for that. Used one of the o-rings out of the HF o-ring kit for the upper.
