Hello fellow Sixers

I have a 1986 D100 with a a833 4 spd. My stock (rebuilt) 1945 went south, so I started the process of swapping over to a 1976 D100 1945 Holley. I ordered the remanned carb from National Carburetors and installed it. I know the carb is no longer controlled by the lean burn system, but based on what I have read, it should start and run (albeit roughly). It does, but not unless I spray a shot of ether or dribble a little gas down the throat of the carb. I can turn the key and get nothing but starter, add a little ether and it fires right up. Here is what I have done so far:

1) I have checked the fuel pump by disconnecting the fuel line and placing it in a clear plastic container. Appears to pump plenty of gas.

2) I have checked for spark, each pulled plug produces a healthy spark

3) Once it starts, if I even touch the gas pedal, it will immediately die (with a loud sucking sound)

4) I have yet to install the HEI swap, as I wanted to make sure the truck ran before I took out the stock coil and unhooked the lean burn. I do have all the parts (all pulled from the extremely informative HEI post Dan put together).

Am I wrong that it should run? What am I missing? Your guidance will be greatly appreciated!

Assuming the needle isn't stuck to the seat... and the bowl has gas in it, when you pull the throttle arm back, looking down the throat do you see a nice squirt of gas?

Did you rough set the idle mix screw (2 turns out to start), and the fast idle screw in a couple turns?

Are all the hoses hooked up where they are supposed to be?

Also did you cap off any unused ports? (That'd lean it way out).

The carb. should be doing the " little bit of gas" thing when you step on the gas peddle before turning the key. Also sets the choke when needed.

That is how they work.

Not at all like just turning the key on with fuel injection.

Try real hard to stay away from the ether.

Is the choke set right? It sounds to me, like what will happen when the choke isn't closing properly.
Even on a warm day, the choke might need to be set for a cold engine start-up.

Removing the lean burn system, you need to set it up like an earlier system.
Might want to finish the HEI set-up, before going further as well.
It all works together.

I never thought to look! Just pulled the throttle arm and......nothing. Has to be internal.

Honesty, in regards to the ports, I just hooked up the prev 1945's hoses just for the initial start. Once I get the distributor in with the HEI, I will cap whats not needed. Thanks so much for your response.

I finally got a chance to walk into the garage this weekend without assistants under the age of 6. Took the carb off to empty any gas that was in it, but it was completely dry. I lightly blew some air through the fuel fitting until I could hear a soft hissing in the carb throat. Reinstalled and it popped right off! Definitely a stuck needle. Thank you so much DusterIdiot! Now to install the HEI, then back on the road!
