And then spend the rest of your time worrying about a pump that's close to 50 years old in your brand new engine? That's like going to a party and throwing a turd into the punch bowl, and telling everyone to just put some more sugar in the bottom of their cup. I'm sorry there has to be a better way around this problem.
Hello, new poster. Welcome to the board. Rather than guess and assume when you don't actually know, try asking the people who do know. Try questions like "Why is that recommended? What makes the old pumps better?". Or at least, since you're in a mode of guessing and assuming, you could maybe guess and assume that one doesn't just throw an old pump on the engine, one goes through that pump and reconditions it before using it. Or one buys a new old stock pump rather than a current-production item. Maybe one even checks the oil pump/cam worm mesh in the process of building the engine!

Uh…no. People manage to build durable Slant-6 engines without oil pump/cam worm problems, and without external belt-driven oil pumps (which have their own problems…lose a belt or a hose connection, lose your engine!). It just takes knowing what to do. Knowing is not the same thing as guessing or assuming.
Dan, First off I am not a new poster, and that's a pretty harsh response to somebody who was only trying to be a little light hearted about a somewhat serious problem. Fact of the matter is I have spent the better part of the last 5 months (since purchasing a Dodge truck), reading just about every pertenent thread on this site trying to learn as much as possible before making a final decision as to wether or not move forward with my build. In fact I had started a whole thread dedicated to my build so I could ask questions. But that thread got lost when the site crashed. I was only trrying to generate a more insight and thought into a different work around to this problem. I really don't think it required a chastizing from you, i guess the self proclaimed /6 police.
Furthermore if you go back and read my posts you will see in fact that I mentioned the issues with running an external pump and belt walk. Also can you point to any of my post where I was assuming or guessing anything???????
One other thing Dan although i do admire your wealth of knowledge in regards to /6's, if you have a problem with my post just don't respond. Oh and another thing Dan, I have been on this long enough to have correspondence with other board member via PM warning me about your ego..............Have a nice day

The truth is, it is also a worry to a lot of other people too.

If you want the best choice ( My opinion) find a good used cam and oil pump that have been in an engine for 100,000 + miles and have that cam reground. Go through the pump and the install it in relative peace that you have done the best you can. You should'nt have any problems.

I will say this, my peace of mind comes from a Low oil pressure cut off switch. If you do loose a cam/ oil pump gear at any point in the future, at least you don't destroy your engine. I have them on all my stuff, race car or daily driver. It has already saved by bacon once! :D :D

Hi All:

Didn't mean to open up this particular can of worms. Truth is, I never even considered this as a problem. I guess I'll find out if it works for me or not. It seems a simplistic answer, but it's the only one I have.

I'm not an 'engine' guy, I'm not a 'mechanical' guy...in fact, I can change a water pump, a rad, starter, clutch (If I REALLY had to), but that's about it. This is my first (yes, first) foray into the realm of vehicle restoration. As such, I rely on the advice and knowledge of those who have done it before me. I would like to emphatically say, that over the past year, Dan has been a very informative, helpful individual to me and has greatly assisted me in my build. I appreciate his advice, his direction and his encouragement. I've never have had a problem with his 'ego'. All this sounds a little too much 'high-school', for me.

Shawn

I don't have a 300hp engine, I'm not trying to muscle-out my 225 slant six. I do know one thing, though...no matter what you do, someone will tell you that you've made the wrong decision. I appreciate ALL the feedback I get, however I try to keep moving forward. Yes, I make mistakes as I go, but I am learning and I can say that I learn more from the positive suggestions, than the negative ones.

I continue to appreciate all the help I can get.

Shawn

Oh, sorry! I was going by your post count (five).

Oh! When you said "I am on the fence right now as to stay with my 225 rebuild for my street rod as planned, or head in an entirely different direction becuase of the gear problem. I just can't see spending the money only to have a 10 cent peice of steel fail and ruin a $5,000 motor. It seems to me the only practical solution is to somehow use and externaly belt driven oil pump" it sounded less like lightheartedness, and more like you are trying to decide whether to proceed with your build because you're afraid an oil pump failure will turn it into a heap of slag, and the only practical way you see to avoid it is a belt-drive oil pump. I'm sorry you feel your words were misunderstood. :(

And you came away with the idea that a belt-driven oil pump is the only way to avoid the problem…and that it's practical? That's kind of baffling.

Many of us lost valued threads. It's a nuisance, but nobody died. Best way forward is to start the thread again, rather than hijacking someone else's and steering it off into the weeds.

I disagree.

I'm so sorry you feel chastised.

Wait, if I'm the Slant-6 cop, then why am I sitting here completely surrounded by no doughnuts at all?

Already did that with the ones right here in this thread. There may be others; I'm not inclined to go look.

You're welcome to dislike me. I will not stop posting because you want me to; if you don't like what I say, just keep scrollin'. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey Lads:

I've arranged to drive out and pick up the engine this weekend. It will be duly drooled over and admired for an hour, then I will be delivering it to the shop for its imminent installation! I'll post pics, if anyone is interested. I'm pretty excited to have this forward momentum.

I thank everyone for their valued input and for all the assistance I have received during the course of this project!

Cheers,
Shawn

Great!

I love the idea of a low oil pressure cut-off switch...
