Finally got the turbo package I bought from Shawn Pohlman all hooked up in the Dart. Big damn turbo with intercooler and a Holley 4-barrel set up for boost. Engine is about 8.6 SCR with a stock cam set up at about 108°. Stock bottom end, 1.70/1.44 valves in the head. NGK Iridums in heat range 7 gapped at .028ish just to be on the safe side. HEI ignition with a fresh module and distributor pickup coil.

Engine has a fresh ring job; it hasn't been run yet. It makes good oil pressure when cranking, but we can't get the damn thing to fire up. I haven't screwed with the carburetor since I got it, and it was supposedly running on Shawn's truck. We have fuel pressure and I'm seeing fuel at the accelerator pump nozzles. Test light shows we're getting spark. Can't measure the initial timing yet, but we're in the neighborhood of TDC. I've checked and double-checked that it's not 180° out. We've tried with the cold side plumbing connected and disconnected, but best we've gotten so far is some coughing and sputtering.

Anything I'm missing? The only thing I haven't tried yet is starting fluid; I'm all out and the parts stores aren't open yet. All I can think is that the carb doesn't like to start up cold with no boost.

There will never be any boost at startup. The turbo setup will have no impact to starting. I know you said you've checked everything but go back to basics. Compression test?

Check the ground on the fresh HEI module?

My money is on ign timing too far out (rotate dist while cranking), or perhaps weak spark. Dist reluctor gap OK? Hold coil wire near fenderwell and look for fat/long spark... Yep, turbo should not affect starting one bit.

Turned out we weren't close enough to TDC. Finally got it to stay running after lots of cranking and fuel shots; we were at 30° BTDC. Also running rather lean at idle. Dialed the static timing back to 15° (running a locked dizzy for now) and fattened up both idle screws, and now it idles alright. Now working on all the emergent "new build" issues. Fuel leaks, water leaks, loose alternator, etc.
