Just finished the first valve adjust on the new to me 64 dart with a 225.

Before I did the adjustment the engine was nearly silent when running with a slight tick when hot.

I warmed up the engine by driving it around and getting it to operating temperature. Remove valve cover and set to doing the valves by turning the engine over with a starter switch and aligning it to the marks that I've made on the balancer. Marks were made by dividing the balancer circumference and measuring.

Now the engine is considerably louder and sounds like a sewing machine. Not clacky just tappy. It doesn't sound bad and drives great it's just much noisier than what it was.

When I was doing the valves they were set extremely tight under .010 on all valves. Previous owner said that the engine had a top end done within the last few years, everything under the valve cover looks clean and new.

video is taken with the engine at operating temperature.

The engine was quiet because the lash was too tight. I like to run my mechanical cam slants at .012 intake and .022 exhaust.

I would pull your valve conver and start the engine and make sure oil is getting to the top end. It is entirely possible that the rocker arm shaft was installed upsode down and the rocker arm oiling holes are not oriented correctly to allow full oiling to the rocker arm tips. You might be hearing the sound of dry rocker arm tips hitting dry valve stem ends.

If you can't hear it at all, it is too tight. You will get faster valve recession and poor running/MPG if they are too tight.

Yes, it's normal to be able to hear 'em…a little. They should not be as clearly audible (loud) as they are in your video.

Try using this valve adjustment procedure and see if you get a better result.

I followed those directions with the exception of it done when running.

Even on the Packard and Buick 8s I've built the manual says to do it running, no dice for me.

I'll do it again

Adjusting valves with the engine running is really quite easy to do. Make sure you get the idle down as low as you can, though.

Er…that's the primary main important part of those directions. The real-time feedback in how the engine runs (and sounds) matters.

If you adjust your valves and it's still noisy like the valves have too much clearance, there's two things that may be causing it. The better of the two is that the rocker arms have wear inside the shaft bore or the shaft is worn. The worse option is that you have too much clearance on your wrist pins. Both in my experience sound nearly the same as loose valves. Rocker arms are easy to check for wear and fix. Wrist pins clearance not so much.....
