 Post subject: motor mount design??

OK, i am just curious, but my OEM style motor mounts have this 'flap' of metal that sort of hangs over the side of the mount. For the life of me, I cannot see what purpose this serves.
Any ideas?

I'm speculating, but how about a heat shield to prevent the exhaust from cooking the rubber? It'll be really warm that close to the exhaust manifold.

My guess is a stop.

So when the rubber gets old and starts settling/slipping/shearing it stops at some point.

I always thought is was a stop for sag on that side, as Ed said.
