Thanks Rick, that's a pretty clear picture, and it all makes lot's of sense. A stock replacement v-8 clutch would be fine. I purchased the clutch for my 360 car from "The Paddock" for $130 bucks, and it holds well behind an engine with about 325 horses. The clutch has never even suggested it was tired or undersized. This sounds like a good approach. Perhaps I could sell my current set up to anyone who has a mildly built or stock slant who would like to put a five speed behind it. I might sell the entire package, tranny and all, and replace the current t-5 with a Tremec.

Have you chosen a scatter shield yet? Where did you buy it, and what brand is it? What tranny are you planning on running? My understanding from Jack is you can pick from a number of rear adapter plates for the tranny when using a scatter shield. How do I contact Mark? Have you indexed the input shaft bearing alignment hole in the rear of the scatter shield to the crank yet? How far off was it, and could you get it centered properly? This is a recommended practice. Chrysler recommends no more than .008" runout, and Ford .004" for those using a t-5.

I haven;t kept up with the Carlisle shows lately. It is usually hot, and crowded, and I haven't been too interested in stock Mopar parts recently. Sorry to be so out of it. What are the dates this year?It sounds like soon. I would just as soon come visit you personally one day. You can;t be more than an hour away from Gaithersburg. Been to Grims junk yard lately? That's another spot I don;t spend too much time in anymore.

Just to get some of the 'sideline' guys up to 'snuff' on 'clutch vs. clutch' I pulled some cores out of the shed and took some pics to help them imagine what in devil us regulars are talking about. My apologies for not having an 11" clutch to throw in the mix, but that will be coming up soon enough...

Here we go:

The stock, 'car' 9 1/4" disc and pressure plate.

Image

The stock, HD car and truck (this is out of a 1981 Dodge Truck...) 10" disc and pressure plate is on the right (9 1/4" on the left).

Image

I suppose you can get away like some other guys posting in the other topic about swapping discs on plates with say a 9 1/4" on a 10"...

Image

but you can't put a 10" disc into a 9 1/4" setup...

Image

Here's a nasty looking A-body flywheel that's been sitting around for a bit too long...

Continued in next post...

So the 9 1/4" disk is a nice 'fit'...

Image

The 10" is a smidge wider...

Image

Installing the 9 1/4" isn't too bad for the 4 speed guys with the bigger bellhousing (the 3 speed only housings are not that roomy)...

Image

As you can see the 10 inch pressure plate really does crowd the edge of the flywheel and is almost pushing the envelope of being too big...

Image

I put together a 'dummy' tranny, input shaft, bearing retainer, bellhousing and dropped the pressure plate and disc onto the 'buck' and tooks some pics for 'clearance purposes'...

Image

Image

Still some room in there to work....

Part of the secret of this is using the proper bolts for the plate assembly too...

On the left is the 10" clucth reduced 'flanged' head, and on the right is the stock larger head 9 1/4" bolt:

Image

From the side 10" on the right this time, and 9 1/4" on the left...sorry about the 'blur'

Image

The 11" inch is a mammoth with a heavy iron bellhousing that actually rides a few inches above the bellhousing mounting pattern on the top-back of the block. Will have to post some pics when I get one in my hands...

more later,

I run the 10" stock Slant HD clutch/PP with the F-body/Van/Truck OD bellhousing. This BH will fit 10" clutch, but nothing bigger. It does have bolt patterns for several different trannys, including the 833 and some 3 spds. I like the sounds of that 9 11/16" dual disc setup as it should even be a little lighter than the 10" stocker.

If Mark G is still making adapters, I might get one of those to play with too - can't ever have enough combos options...

Lou

I contacted Mark, and he turned me down. If he says yes to you, order two, one for me. Thanks.
