I am in the finishing stages of a timing chain R&R, which is part of an engine transplant.

Last fall I swapped from a '76 NP445 to Coarse spline NP435, thus the clutch pressure plate was swapped as well.

As I am putting the harmonic balancer on, the engine starts turning. No problem, throw it in gear....

The transmission sounds and feels like it is dropping into gear, Engine still turns. Pressure plate is turing with the flywheel..

I can not understand how such would be happening unless something inside the transmission is gonzo, and that seems unlikely. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Is the transmission hooked to the driveshaft. Is the driveshaft hooked to the rear axle? Are rear wheels on the ground?

If all of this no. Then the engine will turn when tightening the bolts. A fix is to use a screw driver jammed into the teeth on the flywheel.

The old 10 spline NP435 needed a bit of double clutching to get motivated, it may have sounded like it went into
gear but it may have partially engaged and came back out when you rolled the crank a bit...

Big screwdrive in the starter ring gear works pretty good, having a helper under the truck with a ring gear tool
works too.

Ha! I am easily fooled...

The transmission driveshaft was hooked to the transfer case.. and it was not turning b/c the transmission was in gear..

The transfer case was not turning, because it was connected to the wheels, sitting on the ground.

The genius running the wrenches (me) was stuck in neutral, and so was the transfer case..

I'm gonna amuse myself with this for a good while. Thanks for the suggestions, to actually start looking and thinking, at the same time.
