I have a 1962 Dodge Dart 330 sedan with a Slant 6, automatic. Just a question....why did they add an in-line filter to the transmission cooling line? GPK1961

I don't know!
When I rebuilt my 904 pushbutton trans it had an internal normal pan filter.
I just eliminated the inline filter.

Ive added an auxilary in cooling line filter before when I have done an overhaul, on the "return" side.... to catch any crap that I may not have been able to flush out of the cooler(s) before it gets back into the fresh trans.

Because that did a better job of keeping the fluid clean than the pre-'62 setup with just the fine-mesh metal strainer screen screwed onto the bottom of the valve body inside the trans pan. That inline filter was factory equipment for '62 and '63, and was also offered as a retrofit for pre-'62 cars. It is no longer available unless you want to pay foolish amounts of money.

There are universal in-line filters available, but you can do considerably better than that; see here.

Thanks, Dan. I'm pretty sure that the filter is original to the car. GPK1961
