Hi all. New user here. I recently purchased a 1983 D150 with a slant six and am slowly learning about it. I have owned a 1989 D150 with a 318 TBI for over 20 years so these trucks are not new to me, but the slant sure is. So far so good other than a couple of carb issues which I am working on addressing. I have a trans question as well.

It seems there may be a missing return spring on the transmission throttle rod linkage for the A904 in this truck. The linkage itself operates fine, but with no return in the linkage it has trouble at highway speeds staying in 3rd. I cannot find a good picture on the internet to help me piece it together - most all I see are for super six engines or ones with the Carter BBD which has a completely different linkage setup. My truck has a Holley 1945 so its linkage for trans and throttle attach at the rear of the carb. At slower speeds when less throttle is applied it doesn't have any problems running through all the gears and staying in 3rd like it should. The factory shop manual is no help. Would anyone have some photos of their stock setup in a truck this era with the Holley they could share to help me figure this thing out? I'd appreciate it!

Thank you! That's what I needed. Looks like the retainer that holds the spring to the carb linkage is missing (along with fast idle cam, choke, solenoid idle stop, and bowl vent solenoid). So, guess my hunt for a carb continues. I'll see what I can rig up in the meantime.

Yes, that's the one that's gone. Someone swapped the carb at some point and it's missing a lot of parts.

Thanks for all the help, matv. After rigging up a spring and adjusting the linkage, it’s shifting perfectly now. Now all I need is a proper carb and I’ll be set!
