I would pop in new engine and transmission mounts and see if that gives some added clearance.

Moving the whole thing back on these early cars can only get you a little bit or you will be hitting the fire wall.

If you want to stay mechanical, here are a fan and thermostatic clutch that mount right up and will still leave you room. Works fine on my 64 Valiant wagon. Purchased on EBay a while back.

9 Blade Radiator Fan for Mercedes Benz 280 280C 280CE 280S 300 300CE 300D 300SD. am-autoparts

New Radiator Cooling Fan Visco Clutch fits Mercedes W123 300D 300TD 300SD W116. germanpartsaver

Hope this helps,
Joe

Update:

I ordered a 1/2in aluminum spacer as well as a "water pump pulley shim kit" from Summit and the parts arrived a couple days ago. The shim kit actually came with 3 different thicknesses: 1/16, 3/32, and 1/8.

Yesterday I installed the stock 4-blade fan using the new spacer and the 3/32in shim and reinstalled the radiator. The fan no longer hits the radiator when the system is at full operating temperature. I even gave the engine a couple good 'romps' and still no fan to radiator contact.

Along with the spacer and shim kit, I also ordered a cheap 10in electric push/pull fan on Amazon so I could at least see what might fit on the front of the radiator. A 10in fan will fit nicely in a pusher configuration on the driver's side of the radiator and will not interfere with the hood catch support bracket. I may end up installing this electric fan as a supplement and/or backup to augment the mechanical fan.

I still need to have a look at the engine and trans mounts and replace as needed (probably should replace these anyway), but for now the car is back to running with it's new radiator and original fan.

Thank you all for your input! I will try to upload a picture of the new setup for reference/documentation purposes.
