I have 2 78 d100’s. One with manual and one auto. Can I just swap them over or is there a difference? I have a bad vibration I can’t put my finger on. Have changed the U-joints and it did nothing to help. It’s most noticeable at 58 and higher mph. Since I know that rear end is a good one, was rebuilt previously and I know it was good, used to drive it. Is this just a swap or is more work required? Thanks

Have the tires been balanced? That would be easier to do than a rearend swap. If the rear gear ratio is the same, then it should be a relatively simple swap, assuming the brakes are all good and the yoke uses the same u-joint. You can look for a small tag, under one of the cover bolts, that should have the gear ratio on it. If the gear ratio is not the same, you'll need to swap speedometer gears in the trans.
Swapping rears can be a pain because of all the rust and crud. Besides the u-bolts, there are the shocks and brake lines/emergency brake cables to disconnect.
jus sayin....

Yes tires have been checked a couple times. Should be the same rear end as it’s the same truck except for the trans. But it will be checked before hand either way. The one I’m putting in it has less miles than the one in it now. Most shops around here don’t even look at my truck let alone work on it. If it don’t have a computer then they have no idea what’s going on. So this is the simplest thing I can do to see what’s wrong. I’m planning on uploading a video soon with the noise and vibration it’s doing so maybe someone here has had a similar issue and knows exactly what it’s doing.

Are motor mounts and transmission mounts OK? Driveshaft could be out of balance too. Still not a lot of fun changing rears when your not sure it will fix the problem. You could swap your tires front to rear and see it the vibration changes at all. Good luck.
