New coil that's not the issue. Could it be the ignition? How can a jump the truck from inside the hood. I saw something about connecting the positive terminal battery to the starter signal wire but which one is that. Is that the one that's connected on the side of the starter with a washer a nut. Or is it the one on the top

Checked not an ignition issue. Does the slant six have a ecu? Could the ecu be bad

Did you check for spark when it is not starting? I know, a dumb question.

The pick up in the distributor could be bad?
Get a cheap HEI module and a couple pieces of wire and you will know the ignition module is OK. You already have a new coil. Not much else left.

The pick up are the connection coming out of the distributor correct?

Install the HEI module with wires or what am I doing exactly

Here is a very simple diagram on how to hook up an HEI module. This will get you started. There are whole articles and lots of more complicate set ups. But this works and is simple.

https://www.ramchargercentral.com/attac ... jpg.11321/

Below is testing method for the distributor pick up. Make sure the gap is right

Got NO spark???

Grab your digital volt meter... set it to 2K ohms.. disconnect the 2 wire plug at the distributer. you should have around 800 ohms. give or take.. anywhere between 600 and 1,500 ohms is usually ok.

Before you disconnect the volt meter. flip the setting to 2 volts AC or 20 volts AC range... crank the engine if the distributor is in.. spin the shaft if it is out... for the system to work. you need to see over 1 volt AC.

If the pick up coil passes it's resistance test... the gap is correct ,,, replace the reluctor.

The reluctor keeps a small amount of magnetic field.. so as it passes the pick up coil AC voltage is created to trigger the ignition module
It takes about 0.6 volts AC to turn the power transistor on. if the pick up coil does not create enough voltage... the power transistor will not have enough voltage to turn on.. if its not on.. it cannot switch off discharging the coil primary...

testing the pickup coil takes only a few minutes.. testing the reluctor, a few seconds more...
Rusty reluctors don't work well, sand blasted reluctors don't work well... if at all... sometimes they just go bad... this is the only test to be sure... other than sticking a new one in..

Hope this helps explain some of the hidden magic in the ignition system...

I have spark ill replace the pick up and reluctor since they look worn

Why replace these parts? If you have spark they are functioning. I can't understand what you are doing. If you have spark, the ign system is working. If you have sprk at the plugs, the only ign issue would be not having spark at the correct time. If you have spark at the coil wire but not at the plugs, it would be an issue with cap, rotor, or wires.

I have spark at the plugs

Then why are you fooling with the ign system?

I don't think I have ever seen a reluctor bad unless it was chipped up or something by someone being rough taking it off

Charlie is right. If you have spark at the plugs, the ignition system is working.

If you give it a good shot of starting fluid does it try and start?
