I just discovered, while looking in the parts manual for something else, That Mopar had antilock brake available in 1971. It was called "wheel slip brake control" . I didn't look for what models had it.

I thought it came out around 73/ and far as I remember reading I think it was only on the Imperials
somewhere in there the last couple of years of the imperial as a c body they also had 4 wheel discs as well. I dunno if the anti lock and disc brakes were tied together, ie.. couldn't get one w/o the other, sort of thing

I can't help with type of systems used, but according to a napaonline article, the Imperial offered 4 wheel antilock brakes in 1971. Ford shortly after on the rear only on Continentals. GM offered it on rear brakes on Cadillacs and Olds Tornado in 1973. I'd guess that the Caddy was also the fwd Eldorado.

Hagerty has some slightly different dates. They say that the Imperial 4 wheel option was called the Sure-Brake and was a $351 option. Pulsed 4 times a second! Gone by 1974. Modulators were vacuum canisters.

Drum brakes. especially since they are self-energizing do not respond fast enough for ABS systems that need to cycle on and off very rapidly, where disc brakes can and do well. IMO why most newer cars have rear discs. not that they need them for braking, more the only way to get workable quality rear abs. This aspect is seldom mentioned when many want to upgrade to rear discs on old cars but can't explain why they need them.
Some reply better modulation. If you require better modulation, you already have discs and likely have a track car. But they do look cool.
