I changed the timing chain and got the cover on. How does the balancer go back on? I got an "installer tool", but it is for balancers with bolts. I didn't remove a bolt when I pulled it off. Should I have a bolt? It is a 1964 engine.
I gently tapped the crank gear on with a hammer and small extention making sure to go "around the clock" so it would go on evenly.
Can I do the same with the balancer and a block of wood?

As Doc told me, if your going to tap the balancer on stand the engine on its side so the crank is against the ground. That way you won't put any hammering force against the thrust bearing.

The bolt isn't necessary, its just a safety item. You can install the balancer with a bolt and leave it there, or if you don't want it just take it back out once the balancer is in. I believe its a 3/4" fine thread bolt. Measure the depth of the threads in the crank and get one a bit shorter, and your set. I think the one I put in my car is 1 1/2" long.

The end of the crankshaft is threaded with a 3/4"-16 (fine) thread.
Installing the balancer has nothing to do with any threaded holes that may or may not be in it.
I use a piece of 3/4"-16 threaded rod and a big heavy duty "washer" and a nut to install the balancer. Thread the rod into the crankshaft. (The threaded hole will be packed with dirt and crud that you MUST clean out first). Then slide the balancer then the big washer on the rod, then screw on the nut and keep turning until the balancer is all the way on.

OK thanks. The installer I have has threaded parts to use, so I'll clean it out and pull it on. Can I get a bolt at a dealership? I think it would be handy to turn the crank in the future.

This might or might not work for the bolt. There was a parts list on a different website but I don't know where. Does anyone out there know where that parts list was? I tried to copy it but just discovered I only have part of the list.

I know all the Mopar engines use the same thread. The question is how long is that bolt and will it be OK for a slant 6.

It is a hardware store item. that will probably cost a dollar or two depending on what grade you get. You don't need anything heavy duty, a grade 5 will suit you fine. At the dealer I wouldn't be surprised if it were $10 for the same thing.

One more thing you might want to do before you put the balancer back on.
Take a look at the condition of the hub on the backside. If there is a groove cut by the timing cover seal, you can buy a "micro sleeve" that slips over the hub and basically "repairs" the groove so you get a good seal again. It only costs a few bucks and is cheap insurance against an oil leak. If you get one, be VERY careful tapping it on, because they are extremely thin metal and can bend easily. I believe the instructions even suggest smearing on a little sealant to help it slide on.

He's not talking about the seal itself. He's talking about the balancer. Over time the rubber seal WILL wear a groove into the balancer where the shaft is in contact with it. If you have such a groove worn into the balancer, a new seal will not seat... The solution (short of replacing the balancer) is to get a sleeve for the balancer hub as '74 sport mentioned.
