i got platinum bosch plugs and standard wires to start off with.. i know its crap but it was just to get the car running ok..

Sounds good to me. With the platnum plugs you can run them for many miles before they need changing. I just changed my Autolite Platnums after running them 5 years recently...

Autolite 985 or NGK ZFR5N spark plugs (double-extended electrodes, more reliable cylinder light-off). Standard wires'll be OK; the best ones available for the slant are the Magnecor items.

Sham, Dan recommended me the Autolite 985. I replaced the plugs and the difference is amazing. My Slant is very tired, and now I can squeeze a couple thousands of extra miles from it. Platinums are great, though expensive... I'd go with the 985s.

I think plats are overrated. Best bet with a Slant is the 985s. If you really wanna be picky with getting 'em perfect, get some indexing washers and use the Jacobs plug gapping wires. I do both on my truck and have felt a slight (nothing dramatic, but enough to be felt) increase in its ability to get off the line. I also take my plugs out, inspect, clean, and regap 'em about twice a year, replacing them every two years. Probably a bit anal, but hey, plugs are cheap and so is my labor

The ones Ive seen were copper washers of varying thicknesses that you slide on the spark plug below the crush washer. What it does is it allows you to torque the plug down and end up with the ground electrode out of the way, exposing the spark kernel. Indexing the plug can be done with the head installed in the car, provided you know what the chamber looks like and you mark the ground electrode position on the upper insulator with a marker. On a stock engine with stock compression, the difference will be marginal. An extended nose plug will make a bigger difference, but it certainly doesnt hurt.

I bought the NGK's for my 77 volare super six and love them ! Still going strong after a year and a half of pizza delivery!! I recommend Blowing the carbon off of 'em on the freeway after long term city driving! {usually lots of smoke blasted at some Chevy following too close on the freeway!!] Man,it must really stink!!

I picked up a set of plugs, but haven't installed them yet.

They are Autolite 925.

The electrode seems as long as the 985, but the ceramic insulator is shorter than the Autolite 66 !!!

The center electrode sticks out 9 mm (11/32") - is that longer than the 985?

The spark kernel is in the same position. I am not sure what the significance is between the two plugs. But I do know the local dealers are telling me the 925 is NLA.

autolite.com says that for a 79 volare, 225, 2 bbl, autolite 26. Will the 985's work better and why?
