Thats why I always ran short filters. Quicker oil pressure at start up and a few extra lbs of pressure, even on the big blocks I've owned.

Err...quicker oil pressure on startup I can buy if your filters tend to drain down, 'cause a small filter takes less time to fill up than a large filter.

Higher oil pressure I don't buy at all...unless you're measuring the pressure upstream of the oil filter! (if you are, the higher pressure reading indicates greater system restriction).

i've used napa, purolator and now pennzoil

on my gauge with these filters the pressure remained the same

as long as it works right

I use Napa filters and Quaker state High detergent oil. I never have liked Castrol, does'nt seem to clean the engine as good as Quaker state and leaves a lot of goop behind. My D-150 has had nothing but Quaker state run it since it was new and their is no sludge or dirt at all on the dipstick.

You'll never see sludge on the dipstick. The sludge collects inside the engine (in the oil pan, under the rocker cover, etc.)

What is that black, tarlike substance then. Oil that is breaking down?

Engine oil is supposed to darken with use. It means it's doing its job of dissolving combustion byproducts and holding them in suspension. You do NOT want to see "nice" golden-clean oil on the dipstick for long after an oil change, 'cause those yucky byproducts are going to be produced regardless of what oil you put in, and if they're not being held in suspension in the oil, they're accumulating in the engine.

So is that stuff on the dipstick dirt?

"Dirt"? Well, it's soot, and gasoline washdown, and coke particles, and whatever dirt gets into the crankcase past the breather filter, and water, and acid...

After my buddies 340 duster blew up,due to what I considered to be a low flow thru FRAM!,My new motto is to buy the cheapest piece of crap air,fuel,and oil filters and change them OFTEN !! I know it's lousy advice,butt I'm sticking to it. I'm a slant 6 pizza man.Been running slant's for 18 years. SUPERSIX VOLARES RULE !! Wagons are the best cuz of the slightly shorter rearend ratio,trust me.

from what I've read online fram was the worst of oil filters... haven;t tried one yet
