alright, i had heard before from dan that the reason the engine is starved for gas after running for a bit is because of the filter sock in the tank being clogged...
however, lets say that when it does get gas, after the engine is shut off for a while, the inline fuel filter goes dry.. all the gas dribbling back down the line to the tank. have to crank until the battery is near dead before fuel makes it back into the line again, and fires up.

Yes, the fuel pump stops the line from draining down. Did you do the engine compartment fuel line mod I pointed you to a couple weeks ago? That'll help a lot by greatly reducing the temperature of the fuel left in the engine compartment line after shutoff. Fuel line mod to improve starting and reduce vapor lock

As far as the undercar fuel line, if there's even a very small air leak in it, it'll drain back. The leak can take the form of a rust hole, a hole or crack in the flex line or an insufficiently-tight flex line connection to the fuel pump.

yeah, i had read about that fuel line fix. it does sound handy.

what alternator fan?!.
speaking of alternator..
the bar that holds it and makes it adjustable looks awful weak. its bendin and flexin when the motor runs.

i slam the trunk... the horn works!!
gas guage?? maybe once every 7 or 8 days it'll work

I've found that fuel does run back thru the fuel line (even with a new fuel pump) and that the old carbs with the open vent on top seem to lose the fuel thru evaporation rather quickly contributing to the hard start.


I fixed the problem by adding an electric fuel pump (facet type vibrating plunger) that I run to prime the system with before starting the car. Don't need to leave it on after starting, and it doesn't seem to interfere with the normal fuel pumps operation.

Only if the fuel pump's valves are defective. With a properly working fuel pump and a properly set-up fuel line, there is no backflow. An electric primer pump such as you added is a workable band-aid for the hard starts, but it's kind of like going from New York to Philadelphia via Los Angeles: there are much easier, less expensive ways to get reliable "turn the key and drive away" starts.

Expensive not really when compared to trying to get it to work without the extra pump.

Wired it up to automatically run 20 seconds, so there's no extra steps involved OR run constantly with a switch as a backup pump (which hopefully I'll never need).

i thought the oil kinda smelled like gas when i drained it.
pulled off the fuel pump today to fit a new one, and voila !!
gasoline poured out from the engine block.
im guessing im going to get a couple more miles to the gallon now....

How much gas poured out of the engine block? Good think you caught it when you did. Your oil consumption will probably decrease also .
