I am planning to rebuild a 66 Australian A body with a few modifications to make it run more clean (ie LPG conversion. no more leaded or other fuel).

I am planning to rebuild the slant 6 and would like to know if anyone has seen, heard or can recommend a suitable 4 speed auto gearbox with overdrive. The older the model the better as the fewer electrical fiddles there are, the easier it will be to install.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The Chrysler A833OD is a great choice, except there aren't any near you. Other Australians (e.g. Steve Lukehurst) have had good results swapping in a 5spd box from a Celica.

As far as I know, I have the only 4spd auto Slant car - my 68 Dodge Dart. Used an A500 (also called 42RE) OD trans out of a 89-93 Dakota or Ram pickup or van with smallblock or 3.9V6 (US only items). This requires an adapter plate used on 67-down pickups with Slant and 727 auto, OR you can get a new billet aluminum plate from www.arengineering.com.

Hey Lou - you showed me your set-up on your 68 but don't remember all the particulars. Obviously this transmission will fit the 67 and up A Bodies. How about the early A's. If it would fit it would be perfect for my V8 swap into my Dart wagon.

Paul Pitcher put an A500 behind the 360 in his '66 Dart wagon. It required extensive floor pan modification.

Now that's interesting info! I don't see anything about trans adaptor plates at that site, however. Is it not shown/listed and you just have to contact them and ask? Or is it right in front of my face and I'm just not seeing it?

Dan - any idea of the mods necessary to do the auto OD in an early A? Just floorpan and/or crossmember mods? Am assuming the transmission mount will need some work. Even though my wagon is a "California" car, it's going to need driver's side floor pan work.

Good question. I don't know specifically, I just know it took a great deal of metalwork on both the crossmember and the floorpan. Paul's pigdoc@kennett.net ; you might want to shoot him an e-mail and ask him about it. I'm sure he took lots of pictures; he documented his wagon buildup thoroughly.

This is an interesting swap if it doesn't require much metal work (i.e. floor pan mods). The only articles I've seen on the subject are for putting the A518 in cars, and that requires and incredible amount of work on an a-body. If the A500 doesn't require as much work I may do this to my /6. It probably cheaper then a Gear Vendors add-on.

A500 and A518 share case dimensions.

I cut out and rebuilt the upper (and lower) Xmember, but didn't have to remove any tunnel stuff except right around the X.

AndyF may not have the adapter up, but he made 4 of them for sale. Send him a PM or an email and he can set you up.

Lou

Isn't the A500 based on the 904, and the A518 based on the 727? I thought their case sizes would match what they were based on, with the tail housing being longer/bigger.

I guess I need clarify what I meant - I was speaking of overall length dimensions. So is the overall length of an A500 the same dimensions as an A518?

Oh, y'know what? I think you're right on that. I couldn't remember if the A500 is 904-based and the A518/A618 are 727-based, or if it's that the A500 and A518 are 904-based and the A618 is 727-based. A quick check of pan gaskets confirms that the A500 is 904-based, while the 518/618 are 727-based.
