i've had this car only for about 3 months now. the brakes are suppose to be new, and it does has a new booster on it. the problem is that it pulls pretty hard to the left when i hit the brakes. i read here on this forum that it seems to be a fairly common problem. is there anything i can do to correct this? thanks.

Do you have drum or disk front brakes? If drum, it sounds like your left drum is either set to tight, or the self adjuster on the right side is not working. Jack up the car and see if both wheels turn the same. You'll hear some draging of the shoes in the drums when you turn them if adjusted properly. If the left drags more than the right or if no sound comes from the right, adjust the brake until you hear a light scraping sound (drum dragging on drum) and check the self adjuster. The cables stretch with age and don't ingauge the self adjusting cam. If disk, I have no clue. No experience with them.

How's your suspension? Slop in the bushings (control arms, trut rods) and balljoints can cause things to shift around under braking.

sorry, guys! i didn't give you much information to go on. it's a 1974 scamp with drum brakes. i think you guys have given me enough to work with and see whats going on. thanks!

as stated above, look at your strut rod and lower control arm bushings. usually the strut rod bushings will go away and cause the car to "dart" around when you hit the brakes. pretty common- especially if your p/s pump has been leaking!

Also, don't overlook the influence of the *rear* brakes on the vehicle's stopping behaviour. If one rear brake is adjusted tighter than the other, it'll cause a pronounced pull towards the tight side on brake application.
