i have been looking for swaping a 5 speed in to my 76 dart and i stmbled on this in my search. the swap is ment for the cars with the 4 speed manual or the auto cars but it looks like the only extra parts needed for the 3 speed cars would be the bell housing and the trans hump. it looks like for under 3500.00 you can get a entire kit with a brand new trans.

H'mm.

$3550 buys a lot of gasoline, even at today's relatively high prices! I'm sure this is an excellent, high-quality transmission, but there are much less expensive ways of getting 5-speed manual transmissions in old A-bodies.

I have a 5 speed in my car..(was a 3 speed) for under $500. It took 2 days to do it,,,,has been wonderful for 4 years. The Keisler kit is nice but I would want the WHOLE car for $3500 with a 5 speed.

It ain't cheap, but it's the only way I know of to make the swap without fabrication. I'm just glad (and surprised) they have a slant six bellhousing... Love to do it, just don't have the $$$$. You don't know how much I want a pistol grip in the Swinger.

Several people over on Moparts.com have bought and installed the kits. Most have great things to say about it.

I guess I dont get it...I never wanted one of those miniature cars that were already put together...I always want the kit you assemble. Better yet make the kit into something else.
Half the fun is making it all work,,,bringing home a cheap trans....measuring and plotting....grinding, drilling and fitting. Im a builder...not an assembler. I wanna be Keisler,,,not his customer.

I guess you gotta expect that from a professional fort-builder

i admit that it is a bit pricey but i have no desire to screw around with moding a bell housing to work with a new trans.

Keisler will sell you a complete bellhousing to bolt up a trans for $200. Doesn't even look like you need a core. That's a deal for the hardest part of the project to machine...

McLeod will soon have an adapter plate that will allow you to use a stock bell housing. I will post info as soon as I get one.

I think that us mopar guys are a bit leaning to fab since all we read about at catalogs and sites is small block shyvvy, big bloc dorf, etc etc.

It's a super nice kit tho, but I think is overpriced. They may be speculating on our leftaside feeling and when they call for a bolt in chrysler kit they think we gonna get crazy and pop our wallets and buy 2 of those each.

The worst thing about the price is that there is a company the sells complete kits to install t56 viper transmissions in old GM for less than 3 grand. Since tremec is making the t56 these days the price diffference for a 5 speed compared to a 6 speed should be huge.

actually the t56 is factory in the cameros and firebirds so a gm kit wouldent be that hard to do. so far looking at the keisler kit the trans alone is 1700 and it is rated for 500hp. my biggest worry about pulling a t5 out of a junk yard is that after i get my slant rebuilt the t5 wont hold up.

Hi Sandy,

You have told us bits and pieces of your T-5 conversion project. Could you take a few minutes, and write up the project so that somebody else could learn what worked and didn't work for you? Your efforts seem to be one of the successful tranny conversions tried here.

When i said old gm I meant 60's not 90's. The company is at www.ddperformance.com they sell t56 trans for 2100 for some and 2700 for others. That is the bare trans price. Their conversions for ford and gm vehicles run up to approx 3500 with some kits approx 2700 usd.

I have thought about 6 speeds, and it just ain't gonna be worth it unless your car can handle some serious speed (> 120-130mph) and you like to accelerate up and down at high speeds. 5 speeds is pretty nice, though, I gotta tell ya.

For Slants, I think the Mustang T5 is a nice trans. Up to 330 ft-lbs in HD versions ($1100 NEW from Summit with shifter minus stick part). Weighs 72 lbs so whole swap doesn't gain you any weight over a stock 904 and way lighter than any 833 (alum or iron).

I'm not advocating the six speed I just figured if someone wants to spend $3500 for a trans it's hard to beat the .50 overdrive and a torque rating that can handle a diesel. Personally my next trans swap is cast iron b&t six cylinder 833 into my v100. Swap the bellhousing and nothing else. That's what I call a bolt in swap. If in the future I ever do go 5 or 6 speed I'll prolly imitate sandy since his car is what my car aspires to be. Sandy really needs to make an article for his swap I hope he took pictures.
