I've got the nut off with some fighting, yoke cam right off , and removed the ring carrier, but the pinion doesn't seem to want to come out. I expect that it would simple slide out.

I don't see any type of retaining clip or anything, and the pinion spins freely in the housing. I know there is a crush sleeve in there. Is it normally very difficult to remove. Nobody has every asked this question that I can find in searches. What am I doing wrong.

I've got the housing laying with the open side flat on the ground and hammering on the threaded end of the pinion doesn't seem to be working, and I'm worried I'll smash the bearing if I hit it much harder.

Anybody got a quick answer. Honestly, if you know what I'm doing wrong, call me at home, because I'd like to be done this weekend.

Paul, Get a punch or drft and pound it out. The bearings sometimes have a light press fit in the carier.

Yep, a bigger hammer did the job.

Now I've got the pinion in the freezer, so I can try and take the bearing off. Anybody ever had any luck removing one without special tools.

Luckily, this is a spare rear end, so I can take my time and learn.

Get A new one - I have only seen them being cut off. - When you get it off compare the number of shims - if any, This can help you to est up your new rear.

Pinion went in the Freezer for a couple days and then I hit the bearing with some heat. Broke a couple of tools, but finally got it moved far enough and it was no match for the gear puller once I got a grip.

Would have been much easier to just buy a new one next time.

3.55 gears, here we come.
