I have a 1979 904 tranny that I want to mate with a 1965 slant 6, is this fine to do?

No, the crankshaft on pre 67 motors has a smaller pilot hole. The hub on the newer 904 torque converter will not fit. The older torque converter with the small hub will not fit into the newer transmission because the splines are different.

You would either need a custom made torque converter with new size splines and old size hub, or you would need to have the crankshaft of the motor machined to accept the larger hub of the newer torque converter.

Both solutions have been used by members of this board, but I have never done either. Some modification to the shift linkage may be required, and I do not know what year they changed the driveshaft, (something about cv joint at the tail of the tranny), are some other less difficult issues that you may also face.

You will need the shifting mechanism for the later transmission. '65's still used a cable, as opposed to the later lever setup.
I believe the '65's also still had the flange-mounted ball-and-trunion setup for the front U-joint. http://www.earlycuda.org/tech/ujoint.htm

I am doing just the opposite. I've got a 65 904 and am putting a 78 motor in a 65 Dart. What am I up against?

The swap you're doing is easy. All you need is the 1/8" annular adaptor ring to go between the early torque converter and the late crankshaft counterbore and you're all set, no problem. Get the ring from Pat Blais,
tflitepatty@verizon.net .
