 Post subject: 63 wiper questions
PostPosted: Sat Oct 01, 2005 1:32 pm
The right wiper arm has been lagging behind the other and it clunks when the slack it taken up.
Yesterday they jammed with the right one about 30 degrees out-of-sync.
With the power off, I moved the right wiper so it was at the same angle as the left and powered back up. The wipers worked but the slack between the 2 wiper arms was worse.

The Wiper Post Pivot Seal Kit arrived from Kanters yesterday, so I took apart the wiper assembly.
The long link between the motor assy and the left wiper has a bronze bushing at the wiper end. This is badly worn, but there's less than 1/8" play.

I don't see anything else that could've caused the clunky slack.

ALSO:
The right pivot assembly broke as it was removed (or it was cracked already). The cast metal bracket stayed on the stud - about 1x1" piece with a mounting hole in the center.
The two pieces mesh perfectly, the seal wasn't broken and there are no waorn areas or scratches indicating that the broken piece spun.

Now what?

Most likely the teeth at the pivot are worn & no longer grip correctly-- also you wiper arms could be worn-- have you tried switching your left & right wiper arms? Just a thought--

The seals on the 63 I'm parting were in excellent shape-- they had to be pried lose (seal was still that good)

Anyhow-- give those pivots a good inspection!!

Maybe a good linkage would help. I just happen to have one out of my '65 V100 wagon for sale. Look here:

That 65 linkage looks just like a 63 signet linkage.
Was the wiper motor inside under the dash in 65?
Is it still available?

The linkage and the motor are still available. I'd sell them as a set for $40 or just $25 for the linkage. Do you need a variable speed wiper switch? I've got one for $10.

The broken pivot assembly was the reason the wipers jammed.
I discovered a line where the edge of the wiper arm cut into the paint just below the mounting stud.
The pivot assy had been cracked for some time, caused by excessive play in the linkage.
The pivot assy was flexing and gradually increasing the crack's length and contributing to the clunking and jerking action.
When the crack developed into a full break, the pivot assy flexed further and the wiper arm dug into the body and the wipers ground to a halt.

I reassembled the linkage after epoxying the pivot assembly together and the epoxy weld immediately broke when I tested it. I could see the axis of the spindle's stud wobbling as the wiper moved. I call it the Axis of Evil because it caused me to spend the last 3 days trapped under my dash in a carport.

I had put this repair off all summer and had just ordered a seal kit less than a week ago. Catastophic failure of the wipers happened a few hours before I received seal kit and on the first really rainy day of the rain season.
