On my 64 Dart 225, during a long road-trip from Edmonton to Memphis, I woke up one morning, started it like normal, and when I hit the gas, I lost power and stalled. Chalking it up to being cold, I waited until it was warm, then tried again. The car burped and fluttered until I got to about 40 MPH, after which point all was fine. It's been like that since. The more gas I give it, the more it tries to stall out. I've replaced the fuel pump and filter, and that's not it, and since the radiator levels were low, I filled up, but that wasn't it. I have a minor head gasket leak and manifold gasket leak, but they've been that way for a while without this happening. I took it to a shop, but they didn't know what to do. Am I wrong in thinking that this has to be a fuel line or carburetor issue? I have no idea where to go with it now. Again, it runs perfectly after I get to about 40 mph. I bought the car with 28,000 miles on it, and all the parts were original, so the carburetor is the original--should I just try to replace it and hope for the best? And if so, any thoughts on where to buy one? Many thanks for your time,

Think very carefully before you replace any rebuildable working parts on your car—or at least, if you do replace them, keep the originals instead of trading them in for a "core". The low-miles originals, even if they are in need of rebuilding due to advanced age and non-use, are often much better than the beat-to-hell 'remanufactured" junk that's about all you can find nowtimes.

It is very likely your carburetor needs rebuilding. Sounds like your accelerator pump isn't functioning properly. Remove the air cleaner lid with the engine warm and shut off. Peer down into the carburetor as you operate the throttle linkage with your hand. You should see a good, strong shot of gasoline squirting into the center of the carb throat from the sidewall. If it's weak and dribbly or nonexistent, your accelerator pump isn't working. Could also be that your power valve is stuck or its actuator is leaky. All these problems will be taken care of in the course of rebuilding the carburetor. Now, what's your skill level? Do you need help rebuilding the carburetor, or help finding someone to do a good job of it for you?

I recently had a problem with the choke of my truck.

If the choke is binding or sticking partially shut, you will stumble. You'll know that it's a sticking choke if pumping the pedal makes it worse, but letting off the trottle completely allows the motor to idle just fine.

It's something to check, but your description isn't enough to really make a diagnosis.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I can brave the carb myself, so I'm looking for someone in Memphis to help out. My choke has always been a problem, and I do hear a snap/clink every once in a while when I hit the gas. And, like was mentioned, as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator, it idles fine.

Today, I replaced the fuel filter on a whim, and it seemed to help a lot. Then, after slamming the brakes (blinkers, please!), the car stalled. And it won't start now. It doesn't seem that gas is even getting into the fuel filter (which is clear, so I can see). Can this be some sort of pump in the carb, or does it have to be somewhere before the filter? I just replaced the fuel pump 5 days ago, so I can't imagine that's it.

p.s. I noticed today that it had almost zero power in reverse, for what it's worth, and that had never been a problem.

is she extremely easy to start when zero cold? I also think that power valve may have something to do with it...
I've noticed extreme power loss in reverse especially if you're idling extremely rich (like blacksmoking outta the tailpipe when idling

Falling off the powerband from being too rich is more dificult to diagnose "naked eye" than lean... now if you have all those fancy mixture or O2 sensors.... but if that ain't the case that's gonna be a hard battle...

i just got a 1bbl carter rebuilt on my /6, and i seem to have the same issues now, when cold, was really bad when i put it on... i messed with the mixture a bit. seems much better, but still has that slight hesitation.. so maybe the choke needs some adju. or a vacum leak somewhere i couldnt find.
let me know what your issues end up being..
